Elena is a seventeen year-old young woman who lives in Mystic Falls, Virginia. She is the daughter of Grayson Gilbert and Miranda Sommers Gilbert, and the older sister of Jeremy Gilbert. Her parents were killed in a car crash before the series started. Elena was in the car but survived because Stefan secretly saved her. Since then, she has been coping with their death, with her brother's addiction to drugs and her aunt Jenna's attempts to take care of her and Jeremy. She has the habit to write everything that happens to her in her diary.

When she meets the mysterious Stefan Salvatore, she starts to fall in love with him. However, she soon starts to mistrust him due to his lies and to his past history with his brother Damon. When she learns that Stefan was in Mystic Falls in 1864, she confronts him and learns that he is a century-old vampire and that this is the reason why he is so estranged with Damon, who is also a vampire. After a period of tension between them, Stefan and Elena get back together. Also, despite the fact that she abhors his human-hunter instincts, she develops a tense friendship with Damon himself.

After some time, Elena discovers several secrets about herself: first, she is the spitting image of Katherine Pierce, the vampire both Salvatore brothers loved and who turned them into vampires; second, Stefan saved her from the car accident that killed them; and third, she was adopted by the Gilbert's. Her birth mother is Isobel Flemming-Saltzman and she doesn't know who her father is. Later in the season, she learns that the man she believed to be her uncle (a man she despises) is actually her birth father, who dated Isobel back when they were in high school. She later learns that Damon turned her mother into a vampire at her own request.

In the recent episodes of season 1 Elena discovered that Damon is in love with her.

Katherine Pierce

Katherine is a young woman with whom both Damon and Stefan Salvatore fell in love. However, she was revealed to be a vampire with a cold and calculating personality. She had plans to turn both Stefan and Damon into vampires and for the three to spend all eternity together. Her manipulation was one of the reasons that drove the two brothers apart.

Along with her vampire friend Pearl and her witch servant Emily Bennett, Katherine realized that the Founding Families of Mystic Falls knew that vampires were running around the town. However, despite Pearl's constant warnings, Katherine refused to abandon her plans with the Salvatore brothers. When she ingested the vervain in Stefan's blood (that his father had made him drink), she was captured by the townspeople and burnt in Fell's Church with Pearl and 25 other vampires.

In 2009, Damon told Stefan that he had made a deal with Emily to cast a spell that would protect Katherine and keep her in a mummified state until he could wake her again. When Bonnie Bennett and her grandmother opened the tomb, Katherine wasn't in it. Pearl revealed to him that Katherine had escaped by compelling the guard that had been keeping them. Anna, Pearl's daughter, told him that she had never loved him and that she was no longer interested in him. Isobel had been said that she had met Katherine shortly after she was turned. She returns at the end of the season finale and is discovered making out with Damon, who is thinking he is kissing Elena. Jenna catches Damon and "Elena" (Katherine) kissing on the front porch and makes her come inside. Katherine goes into the kitchen and starts speaking with John, who thinks he's talking to Elena. She takes a knife and cuts off the fingers on the hand that has the ring on it (the ring that keeps him from being killed) and then kills him. Elena comes home and starts to walk in the kitchen and then the episode is over.

Stefan Salvatore

Stefan is a vampire who was turned by Katherine in 1864 along with his brother Damon who hates him. He falls in love with Elena who he secretly saved when she and her parents got in a car accident. He tried to survive on animal blood, but is now back to human blood. But Elena inspires him with guilt and her charm to turn back and be good again. He doesn't approve of Elena and Damon's friendship. He thinks that Damon is really in love with Elena and then to find out, he really is. Stefan is now back on animals blood and is in a non-breakable relationship with Elena.

Damon Salvatore

He hates his brother Stefan, because Katherine was only suppose to turn him into a vampire but she ended up turning both of them. His witty, sarcastic comments in the time of danger make him very different from Stefan. In the more recent episodes of Season 1, it's been revealed that he is in love with Elena, but his good looks don't fall for Elena yet. Instead he and Elena form a close friendship which Stefan doesn't approve of. At the end of the season finale, he thinks that he is kissing Elena but it turns out to be Katherine. He is deeply infatuated with Elena, but she loves Stefan.

Jeremy is an outsider at Mystic Falls High, who secretly spent most of his time with Vicki doing drugs. When Vicki is turned into a vampire by Damon and later killed by Stefan, Elena asks Damon to erase his memories of seeing Vicki like that. After his memory is erased, he stops doing drugs and does better in school, but continues looking for Vicki. He meets Anna at school and she helps him write a history paper on vampires in Mystic Falls. They become close, and after sometime Jeremy figures out that Anna is a vampire. He cuts his hand in front of her to expose her. He has a feeling that Vicki is now a vampire (he doesn't believe she was attacked by an animal) and in an attempt to be with Vicki again, he asks Anna to change him. When Vicki's body is found, Jeremy changes his mind about becoming a vampire and this upsets Anna, who is falling in love with him and thought he wanted to be changed to be with her. Jeremy finds Elena's diary and reads everything that they erased from his memory, causing him to be very angry with Elena. He confides in Anna, and the two become close again and begin an intimate relationship. In the season finale, Anna gives Jeremy a vile of her blood and tells him if he dies with it in his system, he will become a vampire. Then he won't be suffering over Vicki or Elena anymore and he and Anna can run away together. He refuses, and Anna disappears. Later, Damon comes to see Jeremy to tell him that he watched John Gilbert kill Anna, in an attempt to "do the right thing". Jeremy takes Anna's blood, drinks it and then eats a bottle of pain killers. It shows him lay in his bed at the end of the episode.

Jenna Sommers

Bonnie is Elena's best friend. She finds out that she is a very powerful witch, just like her grandmother, and is also a descendant of Emily (Katherine's witch, who entombed them under the church). Her grandmother is the one who freed the vampires from the tomb, after Damon convinces her. When her grandmother dies, Bonnie leaves town. When she returns, she is distant to Elena. Later you find out it is because of Stefan and Damon, who she believes is responsible for the death of her grandmother. Though she hates all vampires, she helps Stefan and Damon get out of the burning building with a spell in the last episode of Season 1, knowing that if they dies, Elena would be very hurt. She later tells Stefan that if Damon spills one more drop of innocent blood, she will kill him and if Stefan gets in her way, she will kill him too.

Caroline Forbes

Caroline is a very superficial friend of Elena's and Bonnie's. In the beginning of Season 1, she falls for Damon, but that quickly fizzles out. She starts dating Matt Donovan, Elena's ex boyfriend. It is obvious that she is jealous of Elena and tries to out-do her every chance she gets. She is upset that Elena and Matt have remained friends and is jealoys of their history.

He is the history teacher at Mystic Falls High. His wife Isobel had grown up studying paranormal activities and when Alaric thought that Damon had killed Isobel, instead it turns out that John Gilbert sent her to Damon, who turned her. He spends all of his time searching for the vampire who killed his wife, until he finds Damon and learns that Isobel is "alive" and living as a vampire, by choice. He then spends his time searching for her. He teams up with Stefan and Damon at times to kill bad vampires. As soon as he gives up his search for Isobel, she turns up.

Sheriff Elizabeth "Lezzie" Forbes is the Sheriff of Mystic Falls and the mother of Caroline Forbes. She was first introduced at a Founders Day party at Mayor Lockwood's house. There she was shown to have a strained relationship with her daughter. However, later actions, showed that Forbes loved her daughter very much and was willing to do anything for her.

She was revealed at the end of the episode to be a member of the Founders Council, a secret organization dedicated to protecting Mystic Falls from vampires. Along with Logan Fell, Forbes led the hunt for the vampires. When Fell was killed by Damon Salvatore, Forbes found the body and covered up his death by saying that he had left town for the Bahamas. Fell later returned as a vampire and swore to turn Caroline into a vampire to have his revenge against Forbes. She was saved by Damon Salvatore's intervention. Forbes appears in several other episodes protecting the town from vampire attacks and attending Founding Families events.

When Damon approached the Council to get them off his back, he gives vervain to Forbes and frames Lexi as the vampire so as to make him look heroic in Forbes's eyes. She was seen letting him know about the Council's plans and was also his staunchest ally among the Founding Families, not suspecting that he was a vampire.

Harper was a soldier in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Left for dead on a battlefield, he is turned into a vampire by Pearl. In 1864, he was one of 27 vampires captured by the townspeople of Mystic Falls and trapped inside a burning Fell's Church. Unknown to the townspeople, Emily Bennett used witchcraft to entomb all the vampires underground. Harper remained in entombed for 145 years until Damon Salvatore convinced Emily's descendant, Sheila Bennett, to unseal the tomb. Damon was looking for his lost love, Katherine, but she was not there. Enraged, Damon throw a plastic bag filled with human blood he had brought against the wall of the tomb. Harper, though still weaken, drank from the blood and gained enough strenght to escape the tomb. He was discovered by a hiker who informed how long he had been in the tomb. Harper bit and killed the hiker and stole his clothes. He wanders into Mystic Falls and meets Bethanne, another vampire from the tomb and he learns all the vampires have gathered in Miss. Gibbons' farmhouse just outside Mystic Falls. While the majority are restless and resent Pearl's leadership, Harper remains steadfastly loyal to her and her commands. When the other vampires, lead by Frederick, go against Pearl's orders and torture Stefan Salvatore, Harper attempts to stop them, but fails. When Pearl decides to leave Mystic Falls, sensing it is too dangerous, Harper agrees to leave with her. Just as they have about to leave, John Gilbert stakes both of them.

Kelly Donovan

John Gilbert is Grayson Gilbert's younger brother. In their youth, his brother taught him about the vampires through the jounrnals of their ancestor, Johnathan Gilbert. They also inherited a ring each that prevented them from being killed. John had a crush on Isobel Saltzman and he was the one who sent her to Damon Salvatore when she wanted to become a vampire. After her transformation, Isobel found John and they formed a partenship to get their hands on a mysterious invention created by Johnathan Gilbert.

John arrived in Mystic Falls for the Founder's Day and was shown as a member of the Founders' Council. However, he knew that Damon was a vampire, that there had been a tomb under the Fell's Church and he knew about Katherine. He tried to intimidate Damon into helping him find the invention but Damon threatened to kill him and everyone on the Council. Along with Alaric Saltzman, Damon discovered that John was keeping an eye on the vampires who had been in the tomb. Soon, he confronts Pearl about her possession of the invention but Pearl has already given it to Damon. John kills Pearl and Harper after this. When Isobel returns to town, John finally gets the invention at which time it is revealed that Isobel and John are working for Katherine and that they are planning to kill the tomb's vampires. Unofficially, their goal is to kill the Salvatore brothers and save Elena from suffering in a life filled with vampires. It is also revealed that John is Elena's father.
