Ramat Beit Hakerem

Ramat Beit Hakerem (Hebrew: רמת בית הכרם) is a Jewish neighborhood in west Jerusalem, Israel, established in 1991, on a tall hill, between Beit Hakerem on its west and the Givat Ram campus of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem on its East. The meaning of its name is Beit Hakerem’s Heights. Some authorities regard Ramat Beit Hakerem, Beit Hakerem, Givat Beit Hakerem, and Yefeh Nof neighborhoods as one “ultra neighborhood” called “Beit Hakerem Rabaty” (lit: Broad Beit Hakerem).[1]

The neighborhood is planned to include 2,050 three to five room apartments and penthouses. The apartment buildings have three to five floors and are built in Neo-Classic style, faced with Jerusalem stone. It contains a large park, a large shopping center, and many pedestrian passages. Between 1948 to 1967 the area on which the neighborhood is built was planned to be an air field. On 1967 Israel conquered East Jerusalem and built an air field there, on Atarot. A factory of Israel Military Industries was built in 1951 on a part of the area on which the neighborhood is built. That factory was removed in 1997.[2]
