He began buying shares of association "Purneftegazgeologia" that owned the license for a few locations with large reserves of gas, organized the creation of several new oil and gas enterprises in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area. In the end, with the active assistance of Joseph Levinzon, who moved from his post as administrator "Purneftegazgeologia" for the post of Vice-Governor of the district, was created Novatek, which in 1996 began producing oil and gas on the first of its three main deposits - East Tarkosalinskoye. Then Michelson had planned to sell the blocking stake of NOVATEK to French Total. However, this transaction was not approved by FAS.

As a result, Michelson stopped at IPO version, and in July 2005 19% of shares of Novatek was posted on the LSE. Investors bought shares worth about $ 1 billion, and Michelson received $ 335 million for its 6,6%. Then there was another deal - the sale of 19,99% of shares to Gazprom. Now Michelson owns about 30% stake in Novatek (the second largest producer of natural gas in Russia after Gazprom), as well as about 75% of the shares of large bank of Samara - JSC "First United Bank ("Pervobank"), which was founded in 2006 by merging the Nova Bank and Andrei Ishchuk’s Samara credit Bank.
