Academical Focus
Working Methods
KaosPilots are known for their working methods. School-work is very much based on group collaboration and the team uses various brainstorming techniques to develop ideas, mind mapping to document their work and energizing games to keep up the working spirit. There are no classes or subjects, but the school year is divided into several phases where students focus on one subject for a period of time. The education takes 3 years and the same team goes through the whole education together.
1st year
–the ToolBox
The first year is focused on methods, theory and practical project work introducing the 3 core areas, Project design (project development and management), Business design (business development and management) and Process design (process management and leadership) to the new students.
2nd year
–Process management and International Project management
The second year at the KaosPilots is focused on process design and process management, including the design and facilitation of processes for external customers. In the spring-semester the team goes on a 3-months Outpost in a foreign country, implementing a project for an external customer in another environment.
3rd year
–Project and Business Design
The third year at the KaosPilots is focused on Business Design (entrepreneurship and building the business plan), individual world practicum and the individual project leading to the final exam.
The KP Values
The KaosPilots on an international scale operate according to the following six basic values[3]:
- Playful
- Real World
- Streetwise
- Risktaking
- Balance
- Compassion
Teams
Every year the school accepts a team of students which works closely together. Team 1 consists of 14 students from 6 countries; the Netherlands, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Germany and Belgium. Team 2 consists of 13 students from 6 countries; Netherlands, Denmark, Iceland, Canada, the USA and Argentina.
Admission Process
Application
The first step is filling out the application form which is in three parts: Map -where are you coming from and where are you heading?, DNA -who are you and what are your interests? and Creative Design -how imaginative are you?. The most interesting applications are then selected and the so called test-pilots are invited to a two day long Admission Workshop.
Admission Workshop
The Admission Workshop is a two day long workshop that takes place in or near the school. Test-Pilots are divided into groups of 10 and get all sorts of tasks to work on. Current students facilitate the process and examine the Test-Pilots. After the Admission Workshop the current students evaluate the last two days and the performance of the Test-Pilots. They then put together a team of students, based on variety of qualifications.
