Niles Canyon is a canyon, formed by Alameda Creek, largely in unincorporated Alameda County, California, USA; part of which lies in the Fremont city limits, and also the Union City city limits. The stretch of California State Route 84 known as Niles Canyon Road traverses the length of the canyon to Sunol. Charlie Chaplin filmed his first films as "The Tramp" next to the creek that runs through Niles Canyon, among the real homeless people who camped out there.

Railroads

The former Western Pacific (now Union Pacific) has an active mainline through the Canyon. The former Southern Pacific route from Oakland - Tracy via Niles Canyon is now abandoned, except for a portion operated by the heritage railway known as the Niles Canyon Railway.
