The Plymouth Laser was a two door sports car produced jointly by DaimlerChrysler and Mitsubishi in a project commonly known as DSM, or Diamond Star Motors. This colaboration between Chrysler and Mitsubishi produced several vehicles, but only three are commonly known as "DSM's". These were the Eagle Talon, Mitsubishi Eclipse, and Plymouth Laser. All three vehicles were mechanically identical, the only differences being purely cosmetic.

The Plymouth Laser was produced from (model years) 1990 to 1994, afterwhich they were discontinued. This era of DSM vehicles is commonly referred to as the first generation, or 1G for short. It was a 2+2 design, meaning two full size seats in front, plus two small, cramped seats in the back suitable for only children or cargo.

There were four models of Plymouth Laser:

  • base
  • RS
  • RS Turbo
  • RS Turbo AWD

The base model was front wheel drive and home to an unfortunatly underpowered 1.8L Chrysler engine. The RS model sported a naturally aspirated version of Mitsubishi's 2.0L 4G63 engine. The RS Turbo model and RS Turbo AWD (all wheel drive) models were powered by the same 4G63, with the addition of a turbocharger to boost performance significantly. Note that the RS Turbo AWD Laser was not available until the 1992 model year.
