A redshirt freshman is one who had his freshman year "redshirted" meaning that he was on the roster of the sports team, and praticed with them, but was unable to play in games. This saves a year of eligibility, and allows the student-athlete to stay on campus for a maximum of five years. Occsionally, one may receive a "medical redshirt" for an injury.
