NC 172 is a north/south state highway in eastern North Carolina; it is one of the shorter state highways in North Carolina and is entirely in Onslow County. It is also unique in the fact that over half of this highway travels through Camp Lejeune Marine Corps Base on federal grounds.

Route description

The entire routing of NC 172 remains in Onslow County. It is unique in that it travels through MCB Camp Lejeune. MCB Camp Lejeune has control over this road and it regularly gets closed and/or rerouted during training exercises.

History

April 2007: Travel through the Camp Lejeune section of the highway is restricted to vehicles with U.S. Department of Defense decals as a security measure.[1]
