Class "A" Schools

"A" Schools are basically the job types within the United States Coast Guard. Upon completion of the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, the scores from the ASVAB are used to determine a candidates opportunities by computing the results into Line Scores and also the Armed Forces Qualification Test score.

ASVAB Test Sections: Please note the AFQT is a combination of VE + AR + MK. Line Scores are in individual scores of each section.

   * Mechanical Comprehension (MC)
   * Shop Information (SI)

   * Electronics Information (EI)
   * Mathematics Knowledge (MK) 
   * General Science (GS)
   * Paragraph Comprehension (PC) 
   * Assembling Objects (AO)
   * Verbal Expression: Combination of PC and WK. (VE) '

These are the Line Scores and AFQT requirements per job.

AMT - Aviation Maintenance Technician: (AR + MC + AS + EI = 220) or (AFQT Score of 65 or above).

AST - Aviation Survival Technician: (VE + MC + AS = 162) or (AFQT of 65 or above).

AET - Avionics Electrical Technician: (MK + EL + GS = 172) or (AFQT of 65 or above).

BM - Boatswain's Mate: (VE + AR = 100)

DC - Damage Controlman: (VE + MC + AS = 155)

EM - Electrician's Mate: (MK + EL + GS = 155)

ET - Electronics Technician: (MK + EL + GS = 172) or (AFQT of 65 or above)

FS - Food Service Specialist: (VE + AR = 105)

GM - Gunner's Mate: (AR + MK + EL + GS = 209)

HS / HS-D - Health Services Technician: (VE + MK + GS + AR = 207)

IS - Intelligence Specialist: (VE + AR = 109)

IT / IT-A - Information Systems Technician: (MK + EL + GS = 172) or (AFQT of 65 or above)

MK - Machinery Technician: (AR + MC + AS = 154) or (VE + AR = 105)

MST - Marine Science Technician: (VE + AR = 144)

OS / OS-A - Operations Specialist: (VE = AR = 105)

PA - Public Affairs Specialist: (VE = AR = 109)

PS - Port Security Specialist: (VE = AR = 100)

SK - Storekeeper: (VE = AR = 105)

YN - Yeoman: (VE = AR = 105)
