Minnesota State Highway 49 was a state highway in Minnesota. It originally followed Rice Street from downtown St. Paul into the northern suburbs of the Twin Cities, shifting termini between I-35W and also the Lino Lakes Correctional Facility. In the late 1990s, the route was cut back to end at I-694 in Vadnais Heights and then fully removed shortly after. Signs on I-35W said "OLD 49" for a while after the removal, however these were removed around 2003.

Route description

HIghway 49 served as a north-south route between the communities of Lino Lakes, Shoreview, North Oaks, Vadnais Heights, Little Canada, Roseville, Maplewood, St. Paul, West St. Paul, Mendota Heights, Eagan, and Inver Grove Heights.

The route was located in Anoka, Ramsey, and Dakota counties.

At its greatest length, the highway ran from the Lino Lakes Correctional Facility south to Minnesota State Highway 3 (formerly 218) in Inver Grove Heights. The route is also known as Lilac Street, Lake Drive, Hodgson Road, Rice Street, Wabasha Street, St. Peter Street, West Seventh Street, Smith Avenue, and Dodd Road.

History

Highway 49 was commissioned in 1933, running from U.S. Route 8 in Lino Lakes to Minnesota Highway 5 in St. Paul. In 1950, it was extended over what had been Minnesota State Highway 88, across the High Bridge south to MN 218 (later MN 3). When I-35W was completed in 1966 and US 8 was moved to it, 49 was extended along the former route of 8 and also replaced State Highway 326, which served the Correctional Facility in Lino Lakes. In 1981 the highway south of MN 5 was renumbered 149. The remainder of the highway was decommissioned in 1997-1998, the Rice Street and Hodgson Road portions becoming County Road 49, the Lake Drive portion becoming County Road 23, and Lilac Street becoming County Road 153.
