Article not visible for edit : Syed_Mohammad_Inaamullah

I tried to view and contribute to the aforementioned article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syed_Mohammad_Inaamullah but its not there anymore. Can any Admin help me?--Sonaris (talk) 22:20, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The article is there for me. It was created in 2005 and has never been deleted. What happens when you click the link? Try to bypass your cache. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:29, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It seems that all references to the name 'Mohammad' are being filtered in Pakistan. I have checked other pages which bear or include this name as they work when using proxies. Would it be possible for any Administrator to rename the said article to S. M. Inaamullah or Syed M. Inaamullah? I will take care of the rest. --Sonaris (talk) 00:45, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

That sounds like an odd type of censorship. Maybe they are afraid of images of Muhammad in uncensored Wikipedia articles. Does it include for example Muhammad Ali with 'u'? Do you have evidence that it's the same for others in Pakistan and not something local to your computer or Internet connection? I'm not sure we should be choosing article titles based on censorship in specific countries. PrimeHunter (talk) 09:01, 2 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Based on your suggestion, I will investigate this further and come back to you. Thank you for your interest and swift response.--Sonaris (talk) 20:51, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Barnstar use: policy

Question: Could someone please give me a link to a page where barnstar policy is discussed and/or suggested?
Reason: I occasionally come across cases where, for example, vandals award other vandals barnstars for their disruptive editing.
    Thanks. --Kudpung (talk) 01:50, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There is no policy - barnstars are part of Wikipedia culture. See WP:WPWPA. (And, just to show off, I made that shortcut. :P) Kayau Voting IS evil 02:01, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
(e/c) I believe that the barnstar page has deliberately been kept generic enough to keep up the "spontaneity" of awarding barnstars; in other words, to ensure that editors won't be afraid they will be breaking some sort of guideline by awarding a barnstar, there is no guideline in the first place. Essentially, the only thing the page says is "If you are sure the barnstar is appropriate, don't be shy!". Conversely, then, you can't really reprimand someone for awarding a barnstar unless it's clearly inappropriate or disruptive, as the case may be here. Because I'm not one to stick my nose where it doesn't belong, I would not worry about the frivoulous barnstar until the vandal is blocked -- and maybe not even after that -- because I believe that doing so would give the vandal further cause to vandalize pages (for example) in my userspace. Xenon54 (talk) 02:04, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Really, I don't think anyone should care about vandals giving each other barnstars. Those are probably socks, anyway, or meatpuppets etc., and might know each other in real life. So, there's really nothing special about it to care about. :) Kayau Voting IS evil 02:11, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
    Good thoughts. --Extra 999 (Contact me + contribs) 02:13, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. As I understand it then , there is no page that discusses or provides any policy or guidelines regarding the misuse of barnstars.
    Query answered.--Kudpung (talk) 02:25, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Strictly speaking, all you know is that none of the responders (and presumably, none of the many silent watchers of this Help desk) know of such a page. That isn't quite the same thing as being certain no such page exists, but at least we know any such page would have to be unusually obscure if it does exist. In theory, all the documentation about barnstars should be linked from the Editor's index (WP:EIW#Award), but even that depends on whether the editors of the index managed to catch everything. In general, it is easier to know that something exists than to know that something does not exist. You only need to find one example to prove something exists, but to prove it does not exist you would have to look at everything. See Russell's teapot. This may seem like hairsplitting, but Wikipedia is enormous with many nooks and crannies to hide odd bits. The surprises never seem to end. --Teratornis (talk) 04:24, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Strictly speaking, a policy or guideline no one can find does not exist. Wikipedia is built on a consensus model, and all of its policies and guidelines exist solely because the community at large endorses their use and maintenance. If there was some hypothetical guideline page which exists, but which several long-time, highly active editors such as ourselves has never heard of and can not find after serious active searching; it does not exist. Wikipedia is not a legal system, and arcane rules which no one follows and no one knows exists do not have the force of anything. Written guideline and policy pages reflect existing practices, they do not establish them. The guidelines and policies follow from best practices, they never get in the way of best practices. See WP:IAR. --Jayron32 01:04, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The original question asks for "a page where barnstar policy is discussed and/or suggested". Someone could have discussed or suggested this in lots of places that might be unknown to the people who happen to be reading this Help desk question - including other wikis, mailing lists, user talk pages, etc. Then again, I'm not sure what the value of a policy suggestion would be, if it didn't actually influence policy. As far as concluding that if we don't know about something, it doesn't exist, I'd have to go with Chad Ochocinco's disclaimer: we're reliable, like birth control. --Teratornis (talk) 07:23, 4 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Wikipedia on Facebook

How do you make a wikipedia article appear on facebook as a fan page? I have seen many pages on facebook that have a wikipedia tab and say powered by wiki and it has all the same information on facebook as on the wikipedia article and you can like the page. —Preceding unsigned comment added by WestCoast31 (talkcontribs) 06:48, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

That's a question you should ask at Facebook, not Wikipedia. By the way, this site is called Wikipedia, not wiki. A wiki is any website using wiki software; there are thousands of them. Kayau Voting IS evil 08:37, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Searching the Facebook help pages for Wikipedia finds some results that mention "Community Pages". To the extent that I have looked at the help on Facebook, I find it far inferior to Wikipedia's help. And ordinary Facebook users cannot improve the Facebook help by editing it. Incidentally, Facebook should in my opinion not limit its community pages to content from Wikipedia, since Wikipedia deletes most useful content of purely local interest. Facebook should also draw content from City wikis which cover local content in much more depth than Wikipedia. Many if not most people have local interests that do not meet Wikipedia's notability requirements. --Teratornis (talk) 19:02, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Updating references

There's a page that has some wrong information. I want to correct it and delete the old reference/cite or whatever they're called, which links to a missing web page now anyway, and put two new references. Yet I can't figure out how to do this without red text appearing at the bottom of the article saying that I've broken the refs or something. I gave up reading the manual, I can't make head nor tails of it. Visual inline citation guide
    Formatting references using inline citations
All information in Wikipedia articles should be verified by citations to reliable sources. Our preferred method of citation is using the "cite.php" form of inline citations, using the <ref></ref> elements. Using this method, each time a particular source is mined for information (don't copy word-for-word!), a footnote is placed in the text ("inline"), that takes one to the detail of the source when clicked, set forth in a references section after the text of the article.

In brief, anywhere you want a footnote to appear in a piece of text, you place an opening <ref> tag followed by the text of the citation which you want to appear at the bottom of the article, and close with a </ref> tag. Note the closing slash ("/"). For multiple use of a single reference, the opening ref tag is given a name, like so: <ref name="name"> followed by the citation text and a closing </ref> tag. Each time you want to use that footnote again, you simply use the first element with a slash, like so: <ref name="name" />.

In order for these references to appear, you must tell the software where to display them, using either the code </references> or, most commonly, the template, {{Reflist}} which can be modified to display the references in 2 or 3 columns using {{Reflist|2}} or {{Reflist|3}}. Per our style guidelines, the references should be displayed in a separate section denominated "References" located after the body of the article.

Inline citation code; what you type in 'edit mode'
What it produces when you save
    Two separate citations.<ref>Citation text.</ref><ref>Citation text2.</ref>

Referencing has many possibilities. We have no way of determining what you do wrong from your post which doesn't even quote the red message. Try to make the wrong edit again but save it and then revert it if you don't want to leave the article in a bad state. Then we can see what you are trying to do in the page history. Your edit [1] removed a named reference called "softland 1". It was used elsewhere in the article where it only said the name "softland 1" which had no associated reference text after your edit. I restored the text of the reference [2] in another place it was used. This system is briefly shown in a line starting with "Multiple" in the above reference description box, and in more detail at Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners#Same reference used more than once. I realize such things can complicate matters for new users but it's very practical to have when you know how to use it. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:01, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

In the article That '70s Show, if you edit the External links section, underneath the categories are lines like "lt:That '70s Show" (with surrounding double brackets). They don't seem to appear in the article itself. What do they mean, and what are they used for?--Bbb23 (talk) 15:46, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

They are interlanguage links. Algebraist 15:48, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I read the page on the links, but I still don't understand their purpose at the bottom of the article. Some sort of editor cheat sheet because the article has references to other country programming?--Bbb23 (talk) 16:15, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The code provides links to the same article in other languages and they (the links) appear at the bottom of the left hand navigation pane not at the the bottom of the main article. MilborneOne (talk) 17:18, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Defamation of Living People

If a biography of a living person is being tightly controlled by non-neutral editors and is potentially defamatory due to omission (suggesting liability for the Foundation), what would be the proper course of action for the defamed individual, short of filing a lawsuit? ValkyrieOfOdin (talk) 16:14, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Users can report alleged libel to Wikipedia in at least two ways. See WP:Libel (e-mail us) and WP:Contact us. However, if you believe something is libelous and you have trouble removing it, you should report it. For example, it would be helpful for you to identify which article is defamatory and why.--Bbb23 (talk) 16:40, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
As the page is locked, it is well-controlled. Naveen_jain is the item in question, and the content is barely a biography. The source of the article is largely a single-source series (about a company, not the person) in a Seattle Newspaper. Not only does this seem to raise questions of notability of the subject, the wikipedia content excludes positive information in order to present a negative POV. It smells strongly like WP:NOTBATTLEGROUND and WP:NOTSCANDAL. Furthermore, the act of excluding information and presenting an article that paints a subject negatively is defamation of character, and is a potential liability. ValkyrieOfOdin (talk) 17:12, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The article isn't being "tightly controlled by non-neutral editors." It is semi-protected, apparently because of changes by anonymous users. Auto-confirmed users can still edit the article. Although the article has some contentious history and isn't very well-written, I fail to see any specific libel, by omission or otherwise. I suggest you raise your issues on the Talk page of the article.--Bbb23 (talk) 17:43, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. My concern was for liability of the Foundation. Since I didn't go to law school, I don't really feel qualified to make that judgement. I guess the Foundation legal counsel can sort it out if it comes to it. Given the subject and the history of that subject, it seems a very real possibility and a huge waste of Foundation resources. I respectfully disagree with regards to the issue of who is controlling the content (reading through the talk page makes it seem to be a grudge match to my eyes), but I guess the letter of control and the actual results are open to interpretation. ValkyrieOfOdin (talk) 00:00, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
If you have legitimate concerns, use the venues described above (WP:LIBEL and WP:CONTACT). No one answering here can give definitive legal advice on how to proceed. It is best to handle this through the proper channels. --Jayron32 00:47, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I see you posted some of your concerns on the Talk page. That's a good start. If you're still troubled by the semi-protection block, you can contact directly the admin who placed it, EdJohnston. I agree with Jayron32's comments about legal advice. Good luck.--Bbb23 (talk) 00:52, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for all the input. Yes, I'm bubbling some issues onto the talk page, but I'm concerned about derailing it from the actual article talk. Still, maybe it will help get the article on-track. Thanks again, the issue is closed in regards to this page. ValkyrieOfOdin (talk) 15:34, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Size of pdf pictures in thumbnail

I uploaded a pdf file with a picture (graph), previously cropped via Acrobat to minimize white margins. Horizontal and vertical size are nearly the same.

    Problems and questions:

    - Problem 1: in the thumbnail display in the article, the figure takes up only a small fraction of the thumbnail rectangle (as if the cropping were ignored) and is horizontally elongated. Question 1: how can the picture be made to fill the thumbnail format more completely and without changing the aspect ratio?

    - Problem 2: recovering the picture in full size from the article requires two steps: clicking on the thumbnail, and clicking on the file that is opened by the preceding click. Question: how can the thumbnail be made to yield the picture in full size with just one click? Boute (talk) 16:29, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have re-uploaded the image to Commons, converting it to a png and preserved your licensing and attributed the image to you. Please see File:Plot of decibel and inverse.png. I am not an image expert, but I have read that this is the best file format for this type of image and it gets rid of all the problems you were having I think. If you have other pdfs that you want to convert and not have these problems, you can download (for free) GIMP. Cheers.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 17:20, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Upper/lower case letters in user name

Hi, I created an account entering as my desired user name "lucabombelli", ALL lower case. The account was successfully created but named "Lucabombelli", which I do not want to use; I guess there was a rule about the first letter having to be capitalized. So I tried to create a new account named "LucaBombelli", the second best option, but that was not possible, because it was too close to the existing "Lucabombelli". Is there any way to have the all-lower-case name, or both "L" and "B" upper? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Lucabombelli (talkcontribs) 20:47, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The first letter of usernames and page names is automatically capitalized. You can request a change from Lucabombelli to LucaBombelli at Wikipedia:Changing username. Note that spaces are allowed so you can also request Luca Bombelli if you want - I don't know whether you can create it by yourself. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:21, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please help me sort out complaint and Complaint (disambiguation)

I'm struggling with the proper way to disambiguate these concepts. I feel that complaint should be an article about the legal term, since that is how it is mostly used on wikipedia. So I created Complaint (disambiguation) and moved all the other stuff there. However, I'm not sure how to structure that page. My problem is that these aren't really "ambiguous" concepts; they all refer to complaints, but vary in terms of specificity and context.

I'm going to set this aside for a little while; if you have any ideas, please be bold! Thanks. Andrew Gradman talk/WP:Hornbook 01:16, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I took a crack at the form. It is a bit of an odd duck as a disambiguation page.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 04:24, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I would say very few people outside of a legal environment know what the legal definition of a complaint is and that the page should go to consumer complaint first. EdEColbertLet me know 04:48, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds like time to start a move-request discussion to see if the legal term should be used as the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. DMacks (talk) 06:49, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
DMacks, hold on--I'm not (yet) convinced that we should initiate a move-request. While I do agree that most people don't immediately think of the term "complaint" as referring to the legal concept, it happens that about 80% of the usages of complaint on Wikipedia are referencing the legal concept. Perhaps that's because people are only inclined to wikify the word when it's used as a technical term. To me, this is a strong argument in favor of not renaming the pages. Andrew Gradman talk/WP:Hornbook 08:20, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Exactly--my comment was directed to EdColbert. But (to Agradman), WP:RM process is to open a discussion on the article's talk-page to get consensus if there is uncertainty about whether to have a primarytopic vs the dab-page at the simple-name. This help-desk is not widely viewed by editors (as far as I know:)--better to discuss this sort of thing on the article's talk-page, where people who care about it have it watchlisted. Website with the Wikipedia Template

    Unattended article

Sir, i was making an article which is based on an Indian Mobile Company. It is the third largest company in market share in mobile phones. It has done many new things in the industry. But when i was searching this company on wikipedia. I couldn't find. So, i decided to write about the company. So that people can know the booming mobile industry in india. So, i want to know why it is being deleted. If i can't make this article. Then i request you to make an article on this company. It is very nice company as it has already beaten market shares of other companies like sony erricsson, motorola etc and soon it'll beat Samsung also. According to its raising popularity.. So i want you to make an article. For more information visit http://www.Micromaxinfo.com/

    Collapsable Nav Boxes

    Resolved

I like my tidy user page, made possible with wonderful collapsable nav boxes. I use the {collapse top} {collapse bottom} templates. Only problem is their green colour annoys me. Is there any way to change this default colour? I've tried the usual syntax; maybe I'm just getting it wrong. I've searched far and wide for documentation on how to do it. Thanks! --Whoosit (talk) 12:03, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I replaced {{collapse top}} on your user page with the template code itself, and changed the color from that green to "NavajoWhite", so where you see that listed, you can replace it with any color you'd like. See web colors for a list. There may very well be a better way to do this, but it works for the moment.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 12:26, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
    Terrific! Thanks! --Whoosit (talk) 12:31, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
    {{collapse top}} has a bg parameter for background color. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:35, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
If it can be done with a parameter, then that'd be a much better way of doing it:-)--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 12:36, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, should have looked at documentation. I replaced it.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 12:40, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, but your first hack keeps it text-free. No "Extended Content" dialogue. Which I kind of like. --Whoosit (talk) 14:06, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
See the documentation at {{collapse top}}. Many templates have documentation displayed on their template page. You can avoid a title by making an empty unnamed parameter (by adding a pipe | and nothing else) or by assigning nothing to title as in |title=. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:31, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Civil List

Firstly, I don't want to edit Wikipedia. I want to find out something. I'm led to believe that Scientists and others of Eminence have been receiving a pension from the Civil List since 1696. If this is so, I would like to know more about that history and process. I'm led to believe that some of our greatest scientists are or have been pensioned in honour by that list. As Wikipedia describes the Civil List as not income to the Monarchy, but an "expenses" fund, it would be interesting to be made aware of the proportion alloted to pensions for non-royal recipients. If my point is valid, then information should be added to the description of the Civil List as its main function is far from its only one and requires further explanation. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 178.105.188.178 (talk) 13:51, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Userbox categories - noinclude, incude etc

    Resolved
     – Remove the cat from the userbox. TFOWR 19:00, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Long time answerer [sic], first time posterer [sic], unsure whether this belongs here or at WP:VPT...

So — I have a userbox which I created. It has Category:Wikipedians in Scotland within the <includeonly> section, so the userbox itself doesn't appear to be a "Wikipedian in Scotland". Which is good.

However... this category gets used whenever the userbox is transcluded. The userbox is transcluded on User:TFOWR/Userboxes. This means that User:TFOWR/Userboxes gets listed at Category:Wikipedians in Scotland. The same is true for Category:Wikipedia administrators open to recall, though, in my defence, I didn't create the userbox responsible for that.

Is there an easy way to prevent this? What am I doing wrong? Help! TFOWR 15:01, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Userboxes#Caution about user categories says: "Userboxes should not automatically include categories." But many userboxes don't follow it. See Wikipedia:Category suppression. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:23, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Aha! That's just the pointer I needed. Thanks! I think the easiest thing is simply to remove the cat from the userbox, but it looks like there may be some cunning technical way to get it to behave. Thanks again. TFOWR 19:00, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Add <noinclude>{{documentation}}</noinclude> to the end of the template and put categories on the documentation page. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 19:04, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No joy, I'm afraid - unless I've missing something (entirely possible...) I created a copy of the original userbox, with a /doc page, and the damn thing shows up at Category:Wikipedians_in_Scotland. It's no great problem - I've removed the cat from the original userbox, and added it manually to my userpage. Thanks anyway (and, obviously, if you have any further ideas they'll be very gratefully received). TFOWR 21:51, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The suggestion by Gadget850 is a way to do something else: To add a template page to a category (for example Category:Place of residence user templates) without adding the pages transcluding the template. Your goal was to add some of the pages transcluding the template to a category but not all of them. This is what Wikipedia:Category suppression is about. There are different methods depending on the wanted default behaviour. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:14, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm slightly less confused now, thanks! Aye, I did wonder - I've got another userbox that uses the <noinclude>{{documentation}}</noinclude> idiom, so I was familiar with it but couldn't understand how it would help here - that'll be why ;-) I'll return to cat suppression when I've got time to look at it in depth. Numbered Lists

    Resolved

I know to use the # symbol at the start of each new line to get a numbered list:

    1. Apples
    2. Bananas
    3. Grapes

But what if I want a numbered list to go down say 10 items and then start a new column and go down ten lines and then start a new column? Instead of having a long thin column of one word items I would like to have several columns side by side, but with decent spacing between columns. Any ideas? Fly by Night (talk) 16:22, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

WP:COLUMN would be first place to look. There are several ways to do it. Some may not allow continuous numbering flow into each column. Different options might let you select a fixed column width (letting browser decide how many columns will fit on user's screen) vs a fixed number of columns (their widths adjusting to fit the screen), etc. DMacks (talk) 16:39, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Super, thanks! I used {{colbegin}} and {{colend}} at the beginning and end of my numbered list and it split it into two columns. It even kept a continuous numbering. Thanks again. Fly by Night (talk) 17:29, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

how do I search for article titles?

Sortable Table problem - Recent change in format

I've been creating sortable tables for two years for many lists of museums, as in List of museums in Cumbria. These tables all looked fine, but several days ago the font size for Wikipedia articles changed on my screen (nothing I did), and then the tables started to look different. Even though I think I have the correct layout, suddenly there is a missing separator bar between some columns and rows. In the article listed, for example, note the lack of a bar between the Name and Image columns, and between the rows for Carlisle Castle through Daleman Estate. I have not changed anything, the layout seems identical, but now things are different. Is there something I'm missing? Thank you for any help. Jllm06 (talk) 01:44, 2 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Is it possible you accidentally hit the control button and the plus or minus sign, or the control button and moved the scroll wheel on your mouse either up or down? Well, whether you changed it inadvertently or it was a passing cosmic ray or gremlins doesn't matter much; either of the methods I just mentioned will allow you to change the font size back (in some browsers). You can also go to the menu at the top of your browser screen, go to view and then zoom in or out. You can also reset the zoom level to the default with ctrl+0 (zero) Cheers.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 02:36, 2 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Sources Allowed and Forbidden

Moved here from Reference Desk. Currently, I am writing a Wiki on a South Korean composer named Bahnus. However there is an issue with the references/sources I added.

Bahnus is a composer who recently ended up in one of Korea's biggest plagiarism scandals, however the Wiki is a biography on a living person so extra strict rules apply to what I can and what I cannot write.(Take note that Bahnus pleaded Guilty himself, but the lawsuit still has to come to a conclusion)

Because I'm not able to read Korean, I depend on English articles and translations from Korean ones. Websites such as Allkpop, specialized in breaking news about anything concerning Korean Pop(Kpop), reported on the plagiarism scandal from the very start and provided the most detailed information found online. Now there is a discussion which is developing with other Wikipedians who say that Allkpop does not meet the standards as prescribed in the WP:RS.

These Wikipedians put Allkpop in the category 'gossip' and 'forum'. Although Allkpop does indeed provide some 'gossip' it also publishes official news, such as translated statements by entertainment companies and record labels on all sorts of issues. For details you can visit their 'About Us' page. Allkpop provides news and has a great number of readers who form a big community, thats why Allkpop hosts a Forum separately from their news website.

Because the other wikipedians kept removing my Allkpop references I was forced to search for other sources to re-write the Wiki. I found English written Korean newspapers such as the Korea Times, the Chosun Ilbo. These newspaper sources were accepted, but these English newspapers only covered the last phase of the plagiarism issue, not the very beginning.

Also, more importantly, I found out that these newspapers provided wrong information in their articles, they state completely false things, which I can prove. Ofcourse, I left this 'wrong' information out of the Wiki, but I cannot understand that its not allowed to reference Allkpop(who know what theyre writing about) and allowing the newspapers(who obviously have no clue what is what).

That is why I ask, Can Allkpop be used as reference for the Wiki Bahnus?

This issue with references also applies to Lee_Hyori who is the singer duped by Bahnus because he provided her with the plagiarized songs. For details on the discussion visit Bahnus' talk page and Lee Hyori's talk page Intouchwithbertj (talk) 16:56, 2 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm afraid that the Help Desk is probably not the best forum for this question. The best place to get feedback on whether or not a source is reliable is usually the reliable sources noticeboard, which is typically volunteered by contributors who are interested in and experienced with evaluating sources for reliability. When it concerns a living persons and controversial information, you can also ask for further opinion at the Biographies of Living Persons Noticeboard. These kinds of questions are usually resolved through discussion among interested contributors, leading to "consensus", and the Help Desk isn't really geared for in-depth discussions. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 21:23, 2 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The answer is, usually, that it depends. Typically, you try to utilize the style already in use in an article. In this case, Over the Hedge has no sources at all, so that gives you an open field to start out with whatever sourcing style pleases you. I might follow the guidelines here. I see they don't offer any kind of "chapter title" or individual strip title. Seems sensible, since many comic strips don't have one.

You can do a search for "Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society", however most people commonly refer to our center as "CITRIS". How can we have such queries point to CITRIS rather than redirecting everyone to Citrus? The question, really, would be whether our readers are more likely to be misspelling "citrus" (which is currently presumed) or looking for the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society. If the former, we can put a "hatnote" on citrus. That might look like this:
(Institution is a little vague; I'm not at all sure what CITRIS is.)
If people are more likely to be searching for CITRIS than misspelling citrus, we could change the target of the redirect and put a similar note at the top of the organization page:

    Constant glitches while editing

These glitches randomly change bits of text throughout the article, such as "Metastasis" becoming "Metast9 GM" or "Metas<ss" and "security cameras" becoming "securitawaymeras". It usually happens in areas of the article no where near the place I was actually editing. It never happens in the preview of the edit, only after I save the page. Using the sandbox first really doesn't help because even if I can correct the errors there, more will just appear when I go to the article itself. Oh dear, not another proposal to dump cats. Kayau Voting IS evil 09:05, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I use categories often to find related information. For example, if I'm looking for a type of hat, I would go to the category for hats and start exploring. I use categories occasionally in Wikipedia, but I use them often in our (Mediawiki) wiki at work where I find them a very convenient way to navigate. --ColinFine (talk) 21:46, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Read Wikipedia:Categories, lists, and navigation templates for a comparison of three of the main methods for grouping related articles on Wikipedia. All three methods have been useful to me - for example, if I have some application software I don't like, and I want to find similar software that might work better (or cost nothing), I look up the Wikipedia article on the application I know about, then look at any categories or list pages it appears in to see the similar packages. Also search the Help desk archive pages for "CatScan" - that finds many examples of people requesting information from Wikipedia that can be found by searching in Wikipedia's categories. As to how useful the various questioners found the advice, you would have to ask them. --Teratornis (talk) 21:59, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
As Kayau pointed out, categories are very helpful for Wikipedia maintenance. When people add message templates to articles, for example to highlight problems such as missing sources, the templates automatically categories the articles into maintenance categories, allowing Wikipedia's small army of maintainers to find articles with specific problems they know how to fix. Maintenance categories are useful for generating statistics on how big our backlogs are getting. --Teratornis (talk) 22:04, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Also see Semantic web and Semantic wiki. Someday, (maybe) Wikipedia will have semantic web features, and that will allow users to do complex queries on Wikipedia, which categories can only serve in limited ways at the moment (because we don't want to over-categorize). And read all the links under WP:EIW#Cat to grasp what categories are all about on Wikipedia. Categories are one of the harder Wikipedia features for the new user to understand. --Teratornis (talk) 22:07, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Agree with all those above. Use them all the time for all manner of things. However, I do sometimes wonder if certain categories are useful, and these are usually outside the mainspace or in the mainspace but hidden from normal view. For example, Category:Redirects from railroad names with ampersands but then there's always CfD if that becomes an issue. Still, you wanted some concrete examples. The other week I was searching for a list of articles that a deleted template had been in, which can be difficult to compile, so I went to a somewhat parallel category and looked at the edit history of the articles in it to see if the template had been deleted from them. When I'm searching for the proper stub tag, I think of a similar article, then to a category it's in with others and clicking on a few, I usually find the proper stub tag. Those are just two of many uses.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 23:08, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Productora de Software Ltda, PSL

Hi. I manage e-marketing at my company Productora de Software Ltda, PSL. We have been victims of libel in our brief wiki description. Although we have edited the libel out, we would appreciate if Wikipedia could erase the diffamatory statements from the history of the page. The libel within the history page can be found in this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=Productora_de_Software_Ltda&oldid=364932775

The libel is self evident, I am sure, to any reasonable reader. Thanks for your help. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Avasquezpsl (talkcontribs) 15:05, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You're talking about oversight, and oversight is only used in case of an emergency. Oversight is used when an email address or telephone number is posted, not when, from what I can see, somebody criticizes that company. If you still want an oversighter to review this, you can go to Wikipedia:Requests for oversight, but like I said, I don't see why that edit would need to be oversighted. It was ordinary vandalism, which unfortunately is prevalent on Wikipedia, but easily removed as soon as it is noticed. --ColinFine (talk) 21:49, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    tree fruiti or vegetable?

good morning: I watched one of the episodes of How its Made the other night and they were preserving some type of inside of a tree in jars and adding brine, can you tell me what this tree is called, what the name of the product is called, and where I may be able to purchase same in Ontario? thank you, —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.109.44.62 (talk) 15:35, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 6.9 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck. --Orange Mike | Talk 15:45, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Removing an Unreviewed Article Tag

I have reviewed an article and would like to remove an Unreviewed Article tag. While logged-in, I clicked special:mypage/monobook.js and I installed importScript('User:Btilm/aw.js'). A tab is supposed to appear (-uat) that allows me to remove the unreviewed article tag, but now I'm stuck. I do not see this tag anywhere. Should it appear as a generic tag when I log-in? Should it appear on particular articles that contain the Unreviewed Article tag that I am in the process of reviewing?

Thanks for your help. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Shasta819 (talkcontribs) 16:59, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think you saved the edit to your monobook.js file - the only edits showing up in your contributions are to this page. Also, make sure you are using the monobook skin. If you are using the (newish) vector default skin, you make the edit to Special:mypage/vector.js – ukexpat (talk) 17:15, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, UKexpat. I have successfully entered the -uat tab by entering the script into the monobook skin. But I'm stuck again. I'm trying to remove the Unreviewed Article tag for the educaedu article but when I click -uat, nothing happens. What are the steps that I need to do to get rid of that unreviewed template? Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Shasta819 (talkcontribs) 23:53, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The easiest way is probably just to edit the article and remove {{New unreviewed article|date=December 2009}} from the top of the page. TNXMan 02:54, 4 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a place for heavier duty public article re-development work that provides both a project page and a talk page?

Let's say that editors on an article want to do a bigger, longer term project of redeveloping a section. And the want a workspace for the main draft (= a project page for the work) as well as a discussion page.) One can't do it as a sub article under the main article (while still having both a project page and a talk page). And one CAN do it as a subpage in their user space, but that doesn't seem like an appropriate place for such an effort. Is there another place to do something like this? North8000 (talk) 17:08, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'd do it in a user subpage, with a note on the talk page directing collaborators to said subpage. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Orangemike (talkcontribs) 15:07, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
User space is fine, as long as you take care to move the draft to article space rather than copy and paste it, so you will preserve the history. When multiple editors have contributed to the draft, we must preserve the history to comply with our licensing. That could cause problems if you want to re-work just one section out of a larger article this way. Another place to edit could be as a subpage of the most relevant WikiProject. However, why not just edit the article in place? You can put an {{Under construction}} template at the top of the section to warn readers about the potential mess. You can minimize the length of time that the section is messy by outlining what you want to do in some detail (on a user page), and then edit from the outline into the article proper. Since you did not tell us the name of the article or section, we can only give general advice which might not apply to your case. Also see WP:SUMMARY, WP:SPLIT, and WP:MERGE - if the section is big or needs to get big, maybe you could split the section into its own article. --Teratornis (talk) 21:50, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I have thought about this for about 6 articles. The challenge is that (in addition to the points I noted) the talk page is too transient, and there is typically no space on a talk page that is considered editable or "longer lived". On some I've been doing a "work around" by deliniating / setting up an "editable draft" section on a talk page. I can give lots of examples if anyone is interested, but am not writing this about any one article. Most of these are just where there is big complicated work needed rather than disputes. I screwed up once and tried creating one as a sub-article to a main article, and just thought I would ask to see if there is a place to do this that I didn't know about. Thanks again. Sincerely, North8000 (talk) 01:31, 4 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Pending revisions and edit-wars

This hasn't happened to me yet, but I was curious about what we're supposed to do about pending changes in an edit war. Let's say there are editors who are having a normal content dispute that doesn't involve BLP violations or vandalism. If I approve these changes, am I guilty of edit-warring, too? A Quest For Knowledge (talk) 20:55, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know if there is an official answer to that yet. Of course, edit warring should be discouraged and the parties directed to the talk page, etc. But my take is that since approving changes isn't really adding or deleting content, it's not really taking part in an edit war. Just my two cents until there is something more consensus-driven in place. TNXMan 23:22, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Accepting a pending change from an unconfirmed user is taking responsibility for the content added in the same way as if you had added it. I have been in a couple of edit wars with pending changes and I found pending quite good in helping keep disputed content out of the article. If you are repeatedly accepting and therefore inserting disputed content to the article then technically yes you are also involved in the edit war. Off2riorob (talk) 23:26, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm. Looking a little deeper, I see this list of edits that should not be accepted. 1. it conflicts with the Biographies of Living People policy 2. it contains vandalism or patent nonsense 3. it contains obvious copyright violations 4. it contains legal threats, personal attacks or libel. Nothing at WP:Reviewing really mentions edit warring. TNXMan 23:32, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed there is nothing formed as yet, the understanding is increasing with the trial and I imagine when the inquest opens such issues just as this will be tweaked. I found that in such warring cases, passing good faith pending reviewers seeing the situation kept out of the way. Off2riorob (talk) 23:36, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Twinkle

Where does one use Twinkle? I can't figure this out. MR. PreZ 23:29, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You can either go to the "My preferences" tab at the top of your page, click on Gadgets, and enable Twinkle from there or manually install it by following the instructions at this page. TNXMan 23:33, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
But how is it used? MR. PreZ 00:37, 4 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Twinkle automates some Wikipedia features, like reporting vandalism/ inappropriate usernames, nominating things for deletion, or reverting edits. The main page gives an overview of a lot of its functions. It also automates some processes for admins. TNXMan 01:09, 4 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
