The Sunshine Plaza is a large regional shopping centre located in Maroochydore on Queensland's Sunshine Coast. The Sunshine Plaza has a number of major stores and supermarkets. These include Coles, Woolworths, Myer, Kmart, Target, Homeart, and Birch Carroll & Coyle cinemas. On top of this, there are approximately 250 specialty stores, cafes, restaurants and other services. The Sunshine Plaza is managed by Lend Lease.[1]. It is home to Australia's largest Coles Supermarket with a record of 22 aisles.[citation needed]
History
Previously a shopping centre called "The Sands", Sunshine Plaza started as a redevelopment and began trading in 1994. It now has 62,000 m² of net lettable area with major tenants including Myer, Target, Kmart and Birch Carroll & Coyle.[2]. A recent expansion included the addition of a Woolworths supermarket, a new leisure and restaurant precinct, and the expansion of the Birch Carroll & Coyle cinema complex, which was completed in 2002.[3]
In early 2005 it was announced that Westfield would take a 25 percent stake in Sunshine Plaza[2] with clearance from the ACCC[4]. The General Property Trust wanted to sell its stake, but joint owners Lend Lease (through APPF Retail) had argued that they had exercised their pre-emptive rights over the centre, which gave them the rights to buy any part that GPT wants to sell before anyone else could buy it.[5]
In mid-2008, it was announced that David Jones would open a 2 level, 14,000 sqm store. It will be the 9th to open in Queensland, with stores presently located in Brisbane, Chermside, Carindale, Toombul, Mt Gravatt and Toowong in Brisbane, along with Robina on the Gold Coast, and an 8th store to open at Pacific Fair in 2011. The new store will be located within an extension to the centre which will also see 100 specialty stores added. According to information released by David Jones, this new extension will open in 2011, and be primarily focussed on fashion. [citation needed]
