Isle de Jean Charles is a narrow ridge of land between Bayou Terrebonne and Bayou Pointe-aux-Chene in Terreboone Parish, Louisiana. It is home to many members of the Biloxi-Chitimacha tribe. The Indian population on Isle de Jean Charles today is approximately 230 persons in 60 homes. It has been affected by the inevitable subsidence of South Louisiana. It lies past the 72-mile Morganza levee system built by the Morganza to the Gulf of Mexico Hurricane Protection Project. Because of this, it is gradually disappearing into the Gulf of Mexico.
