The albums discography of American singer-songwriter Mariah Carey consists of twelve studio albums, six compilation albums, one compilation EP and one live album.
In 1988 Carey began recording music for her debut album, Mariah Carey which was released in June 1990 and has been certified 9x Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), denoting shipments of over nine million copies in the United States and spawned four US number-one singles. By 1993, Carey was a global star and released her third and most successful worldwide studio album Music Box, which is certified Diamond in the United States for shipments in excess of 10 million and is Carey's second highest-selling album there.[1] Music Box was one of the best-selling albums of 1994 in Asia, selling millions of copies.[2]
Carey released a Christmas album in 1994, Merry Christmas and has become one of the biggest selling Holiday albums of all time and produced the worldwide classic "All I Want for Christmas Is You".[3][4][5] In 1995 Carey released her fifth studio album, Daydream, which became her most successful album in the United States, being certified Diamond by the RIAA, and has sold over 25 million copies worldwide.[6] Carey released her sixth studio album Butterfly, which introduced a more sexual image from lead single "Honey". Butterfly and Carey's next release Number 1's were both certified 5x Platinum in the U.S. The album remains the best-selling album in Japan by a non-asian artist, selling over 3,250,000 copies.[7] Carey's success continued with Rainbow which was released in 1999 and served as Carey's seventh studio album. Rainbow was certified 3x Platinum by the RIAA.
In 2001 Carey parted from Columbia and signed a contract with EMI's Virgin Records worth a reported US$80 million[8] and released her next studio album Glitter, which was the soundtrack album to the film of the same name. It was a commercial failure both in the US and worldwide receiving only Platinum status and is her second lowest selling album to date.
Carey signed a new deal in 2002 with Island Records and released her ninth studio album Charmbracelet which was more successful than Glitter, selling 1.3 million copies in the U.S. Carey took a 3 year break after this album to record new material and introduce a hip-hop influence she released her tenth studio album The Emancipation of Mimi, which became the best-selling album of 2005 in the United States, and was a huge success worldwide, being certified 6x Platinum by the and selling over 10 million copies worldwide. The Emancipation of Mimi produced her biggest song of the decade, "We Belong Together", which topped the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 for fourteen weeks, and became a large success across the globe. In 2008, Carey released her eleventh studio album E=MC2, which was certified Platinum by the RIAA, and has sold over 2.5 million copies worldwide. It produced the #1 single "Touch My Body" which broke her tie with Elvis Presley for the most #1s in America. Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel her 12th studio album was released in 2009. It has been certified Gold (500,000+) by the RIAA.
At the 2000 World Music Awards, she received the Millennium Award for becoming the best-selling female artist of the 2000s.[9] She is also the recipient of the Chopard Diamond Award at the 2003 World Music Awards, recognizing sales of over 100 million albums worldwide. According to the RIAA, she is the third best-selling female artist and sixteenth overall recording artist with shipments of over 63 million albums in the US. She is also ranked as the best-selling female artist of the US Nielsen SoundScan era (third best-selling artist overall) with album sales of 52,600,000.[10] Carey has sold more than 175 million albums, singles and videos worldwide.[11][12][13][14][15]
