WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2011 (often shortened to WWE SvR 2011) is an upcoming professional wrestling video game developed by Yuke's and published by THQ for the PlayStation 2 (PS2), PlayStation 3 (PS3), PlayStation Portable (PSP), Wii and Xbox 360 systems. It will be the twelfth video game in the WWE SmackDown vs. Raw series and will be released on October 26, 2010.[1] The game will be based on the promotion World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), and is named after its two brands (Raw and SmackDown) that battle one another in actual WWE storylines.[2]
The game features a new mode WWE Universe to take over the Career mode, a revamped Hell in a Cell match, new tweaks in controls, the return of free-roaming around backstages, and a new physics system.
Gameplay
One of the main changes in the gameplay for WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2011 will be the incorporation of a new dynamic physics system that allow objects to be used more widely, in particular objects involved in the Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match. Tables will now break differently depending on the impact placed upon them. Inside and outside the ring, ladders can now be rested onto the ring ropes and be broken into pieces. For the first time since the original WWE SmackDown! vs. Raw game, chairs can now be thrown at the player's opponents .[1][3]
The Hell in a Cell match will be revamped with expanded cell walls, weapons underneath the ring, steel steps near the poles, and the removal of the cell door. However, new ways to exit the cell are introduced such as barreling through the cage wall.[4]
For the first time since WWE SmackDown! Here Comes the Pain, you can roam freely around the backstage areas. Moves and controls are modified to incorporate new options to perform during and after a move is executed. The strong grapple modifier has been revamped to allow the player to perform more powerful moves on the opponent as the player progresses into the match and wears down the opponent.[5]
Modes
WWE Universe
One of the biggest additions is the "WWE Universe" mode. It replaces the career mode from previous games and incorporates the user-adjusted settings from the My WWE menu such as rivalries. [6]
Road to WrestleMania
The Road to WrestleMania mode has been modified to include roaming around backstage to access certain mini-quests, interact with other Superstars, and so on. Progression into the selected Superstar's Road to WrestleMania will be affected by choices the player makes such as alliances.[7]
Create Modes
Modifications to the Create A Superstar mode include pre-loaded attribute points for a created superstars. In Create A Finisher mode, attributes such as speed and trajectory can be modified by single increments rather than 25% increments. The number of available created finishers are expanded to 130 as well.[8] GamingRing has announced that the new starting position is from the turnbuckle.
Development
The first official announcement for both WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2011 and WWE All Stars was made at E3 in June 2010 by THQ, shortly followed by an interview with gaming website GameSpot.[1] A playable demo was featured at E3 featuring Randy Orton, The Undertaker, Chris Jericho and The Miz as playable characters.[3] It will be the first game in the series since WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2007 not to be released on the Nintendo DS.[9]
Roster
Undertaker, Randy Orton, The Miz & Chris Jericho were included in the E3 demo of the game. Drew McIntyre, Triple H, Edge, Sheamus, John Cena, Michelle McCool, Eve Torres, Bret Hart and Melina were confirmed at the 2010 SummerSlam Axxess
