Until recently, political campaigns used the term "free media" to refer to media coverage that appears as news rather than as advertising ("paid media"). Now the term "earned media" is commonly used to describe newspaper articles, TV news stories, web news, letters to the editor, op-ed pieces, and "fast polls" on TV and the Web.
