Maxwell Caulfield (born Maxwell Newby, 23 November 1959) is an English-born film, stage and television actor best known for his role as Michael Carrington in the musical film Grease 2 (1982). He has over 70 credits across film, stage and TV. In the 2000s he was a cast member in the long running soap opera Emmerdale.

Early life

Caulfield was born as Maxwell Newby in Duffield, Derbyshire.[1] the elder son of Peter Newby and his wife, Oriole. He has a younger brother, Marcus Maclaine, a musician. The actor's American stepfather, an ex-US Marine reportedly kicked Caulfield out of the house at the age of 17. Caulfield attended the prestigious St. Paul's School, London. He later became a stripper at the Windmill Theatre in London in order to obtain an Equity card enabling him to work in the theatre. Broadwayworld.com, 18 April 2006. Career

Theatre

Caulfield made his acting debut off-Broadway in 1981 as the titular drifter in Joe Orton's Entertaining Mr. Sloane.[2]

He made his Broadway debut in J. B. Priestley's An Inspector Calls opposite Siân Phillips.[2] He also played opposite Jessica Tandy and Elizabeth Wilson in Salonika in which he appeared fully nude for most of the play.[2] In 2007, Caulfield performed in the Charles Busch play, Our Leading Lady, opposite Kate Mulgrew. He has also played the leading role in a regional production of the Jerry Herman musical, La Cage aux Folles.

His first major movie role was as the geek-turned-hunk Michael Carrington in the musical film Grease 2 (1982) opposite Michelle Pfeiffer.

Caulfield played the role of Mark Wylde in the British ITV soap opera Emmerdale from January 2009 until his character was killed off on 14 January 2010.[3]

Caulfield played Miles Colby on the ABC-TV series The Colbys from 1985–1987 and also Dynasty in 1985 and in 1988.

Caulfield has also done voice work. He voiced the character of Alistair Smythe in Spider-Man: The Animated Series from 1994–1998 and was the voice of James Bond in the videogame Nightfire.

Personal life

In 1980, Caulfield, then 21, became the third husband of actress Juliet Mills, who is 18 years his senior.[2] Nonetheless the marriage has remained intact for almost three decades. Caulfield is stepfather to Mills' son Sean Alquist from her first marriage and he also adopted her daughter, Melissa, from Mills' second marriage. Caulfield's younger brother, Marcus Maclaine, had a relationship with Juliet Mills' younger sister, Hayley.[citation needed]

Caulfield and Mills reside in Sherman Oaks, California.
