Bulnes is a Chilean city and commune in Ñuble Province, Biobío Region. The commune spans an area of 425.4 km2 (164 sq mi).[3]

Demographics

According to the 2002 census of Population and Housing by the National Statistics Institute (Instituto Nacional de Estadísticas or INE) Bulnes had 20,595 inhabitants; of these, 12,514 (60.8%) lived in urban areas and 8,081 (39.2%) in rural areas. At that time, there were 10,275 men and 10,320 women. The population grew by 4.5% (882 persons) between the 1992 and 2002 censuses.[3]

Administration

As a commune, Bulnes is a third-level administrative division of Chile administered by a communal council, headed by an alcalde who is directly elected every four years. The 2008-2012 alcalde is Gerardo Rojas Escudero (PPD), and the council has the following members:[1][2]

Within the electoral divisions of Chile, Bulnes is represented in the Chamber of Deputies as a part of the 42nd electoral district (San Fabián, Ñiquén, San Carlos, San Nicolás, Ninhue, Quirihue, Cobquecura, Treguaco, Portezuelo, Coelemu, Ránquil, Quillón, Cabrero and Yumbel). The commune is represented in the Senate as part of the 12th senatorial constituency (Biobío Cordillera).
