French ban on Islamic head coverings was a French law passed by the Senate of France on September 14, 2010, forbidding the wearing of burqas, hijabs, and other veils covering the face in publand other full length veils covering the face in public. [1] It had previously been passed by National Assembly of France in July, 2010.[2] The bill awaits signature of President Nicolas Sarkozy.[3]
Background
The French Parliament began an initial inquiry on the issue shortly after President Nicolas Sarkozy stated such veils were "not welcome" within France in June 2009.[3] Sarkozy had stated the law "is to protect women from being forced to cover their faces and to uphold France's secular values."[4] A poll done by Pew Research Center leading up to the vote indicated 80% of French Voters supported the ban.[5] France has a Muslim population that is estimated to be between 5 and 6 million out of which only about 2000 women wear the head coverings to be banned by this bill.[2]

The Law levies a fine on violator of 150 euros for women Violating the law. The Bill also penalizes a fine 30,000 euros and one year in Jail for men who require members of their families to wear head coverings.[6] This fine is doubled if the victim being forced to wear head coverings is a minor.[1]
