John Campbell can best be understood as a representative of the British aristocratic class of the 1700's. His fathers grandfather Sir John Campbell was created first Earl of Loudon 1637, he resisted Charles I in 1641 was appointed Lord High Chancellor of Scotland, an office which he held for 19 years, until he was deposed at the restoration; and was also First Commissioner of the Treasury; In 1648 he was President of the Scottish Parliament. The first Earl Campbell died in 1663.
