Orton Chirwa

Born Orton Edgar Ching'oli Chirwa, on 30 January 1919. He was a lawyer and politician. He qualified as a lawyer in 1958.

Political Life In 1959 the British Colinial Government the banned the NAC and arrested most of its leaders, including Dr. Banda. Orton Chirwa created a new political movement called the Malawi Congress Party and became its first president. In 1960; Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda was releases from Gwelu Prison; Orton Chirwa stood down and Dr. Banda took over the leadership of the Malawi Congress Party which later led Malawi to independence in 1964.
