Foxboro Hot Tubs

The Foxboro Hot Tubs is an American garage rock band. The band was subject to speculation as a side project of Green Day[1], which was later confirmed [2]. All members of the band perform live with Green Day (with the exception of Kevin Preston) [3]. Their debut album, Stop Drop and Roll!!! was released on April 22, 2008.

As with Green Day's suspected other side project (The Network), Billie Joe Armstrong adopted an alter ego who goes by the name Reverend Strychnine Twitch [4]. In 2008, the band embarked on a small tour in the Bay Area, touring tiny club venues.[5]

History

Background and Stop Drop and Roll!!! (2007-2008)

The band was brought to the attention of Green Day fans through messages sent to a select few members of the Idiot Club (Green Day's fan club)[6] in December 2007, with three songs on their website. They formed with the idea that they "love to play music and be spontaneous, and after a few late night jams and a few too many bottles of wine, we were inspired to record some rockin' eight-track recordings" [7]. While the band's history is, as yet, unknown, they comprise the official and backing members of Green Day (with the exception of Preston), who are performing "garage" music under a nom de plume. Fans of Foxboro Hot Tubs have noted, on the band's MySpace site, many musical similarities between the band and Green Day. Among the common traits listed are Billie Joe Armstrong's "unmistakable" vocals and guitar playing (despite the fact that Armstrong doesn't play guitar in the Tubs), and a rhythm section which recalls the sound of Green Day's own Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool [8].

As speculation started to peak, Green Day confirmed that they were the Foxboro Hot Tubs, with Billie Joe Armstrong stating "The only similarity between Green Day and Foxboro Hot Tubs is that we are the same band" [7]. He also went on to explain where the name "Foxboro Hot Tubs" came from, "The Foxboro Hot Tubs were a place we used to sneak booze and chicks into late at night. But most of the time it was just 'dude soup'." Foxboro is a housing development located in Hercules, California.

On December 8, 2007, Foxboro Hot Tubs' site released 6 tracks, in streaming and downloadable mp3 formats, free of charge to the listener. Five days later, on December 13, the MP3s were taken off the site, which then displayed just a clock. The MP3s were reinstated on December 16, but were again removed and replaced with the clock; later the website was changed to simply redirect to the band's MySpace. All the tracks (apart from Highway 1) were included on the bands debut album Stop Drop and Roll!!!, with the samples at the beginning removed. Soon after, the song "Mother Mary" became a hit on alternative rock radio, hitting #16 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. "The Pedestrian" was released as the second single off the album.

The band made their television debut on Last Call with Carson Daly, with a week dedicated to Green Day, with them performing at the end of every show on the week beginning June 15, 2009, and the Foxboro Hot Tubs played on June 19, 2009. During this performance they played "Stop Drop and Roll" and "Mother Mary", bridging the two songs together [9].

Supporting Green Day and It's Fuck Time (2008-2009)

On October 31, 2009 they appeared at the MEN Arena in Manchester, as the second support act to Green Day, they played right after main support act, Prima Donna and played a three song set which included "Stop Drop and Roll", "Mother Mary" and "Sally" [10]. On Sunday 1 November they played a headlining set at the Relentless Garage in Islington, London after Green Day played Wembley Arena earlier that evening. The band took to the stage shortly before 1am and played for 2 hours, playing title track "Stop Drop and Roll" a total of six times across the evening, saying they "could play it better than before". They played a series of covers, including Green Day and The Network songs.[11].

In April of 2010 it was announced on the Idiot Club website that Foxboro Hot Tubs were going to be playing live at Don Hills on April 23, and the Bowery Electric on April 25, in New York.[12][13] At the Don Hills show, they debuted a new song entitled "It's Fuck Time" which they played 8 times that night. [14] On July 1, 2010, Green Day performed the song for the first time as Green Day in Mainz, Germany. [15] It is unknown if the song will be recorded as a Foxboro Hot Tubs song or a Green Day song, although it could be either due to Green Day stating in a recent interview that the next Green Day album would be "Green Day with maybe just a bit of Foxboro Hot Tubs"
