Duke Nukem Next-Gen (Working Title) is a officially sanctioned First-person shooter fan project in development. Announced on the Gearbox forums on October 13, 2010[1] And is based on the Duke Nukem series. The game is intended to be a next generation reimagining of the 1996 game, Duke Nukem 3D.

Development

In the fall of 2010, Frederik Schreiber had started entertain the idea of doing a Duke Nukem 3D remake. So Schreiber created a test map to a give a idea of what it may look like. Which he then took screenshots of it and posted them on the Gearbox forums.[2] Shortly after posting the screenshots. The images and the project made their way to various gaming sites.[3][4][5] And caused a small buzz within the gaming community.

Not having official permission to continue with the project at the time. Schreiber went about getting the official permission to continue the project. He first contacted Gearbox Software, who told him to contact George Brussard and Scott Miller at 3D Realms. Since they don't have anything to do with the former Duke Nukem games. So Schreiber contacted 3D Realms. And after having correspondence with 3D realms for some time. The screenshots were enough to convince Scott Miller to a certain degree abut the project. But the game would need Take Two's permission for it to happen.

Schreiber again contacted contact Gearbox. In hopes that they would have a better relationship with Take Two than 3D Realms would. After following the proper channels within the Gearbox. He was able to get in contact with PJ Putnam, Vice President and General Counsel of Gearbox Software. Gearbox was interested in the helping the project. And Schreiber was eventually granted a "personal non-commercial license" to Duke Nukem.[6]

Having received official permission to proceed. Schreiber officially announced the game October 13, 2010. With small team already set up to work on the game. Along with openings for people with certain skills. It was also stated the game would be based on the Unreal Engine 3. And would not require any other game for it to run.

The game has no planed release date apart from "When it's Done". But Schreiber has said they won't hold back the game while it's in development. And will be giving the community chances to test the game while at different phases of the development. With the first multiplayer demo coming "sooner than you think".[7]
