Area code 919
Area code 919 is a telephone area code serving all or parts of 11 counties in the north-central area of the U.S. state of North Carolina. It serves the primary cities of Raleigh, Durham, Cary and Chapel Hill, and the surrounding suburban areas of the Research Triangle Metropolitan Region, as well as the outlying towns and nearby rural areas of Oxford to the north, Sanford to the south, and Goldsboro to the southeast.
It was split off from area code 704 in 1954, and originally covered the entire eastern part of the state from Winston-Salem to Wilmington. In 1993, the western and southern portions of the area code were split off to form area code 910. In 1998, the northeastern portion was split off to form area code 252.
The area code permits 7 or 10 digit dialing for calls within the area code.
The area code is slated for an overlay with area code 984 in 2012. The overlay was initially slated for 2001 but was deferred when the supply of numbers was deemed sufficient for the near term.[1]
