List of bus routes in Pittsburgh

A refurbished and repainted 1996 NovaBus Classic, one of many PAT buses that feature various color schemes, designs and messages.

The Port Authority's bus system covers Allegheny County, and its service extends into neighboring Beaver, Butler, Washington and Westmoreland counties. These counties also have their own transit systems, including several routes that run into Downtown Pittsburgh, where riders can make connections with Port Authority service.

Bus operations

• Route numbers operating seven days a week including holidays (4 am to 2 am daily) are listed in Blue. On most of the daily bus routes, they operate on a 90 minute interval after 7 pm Monday through Saturday and all day on Sunday and Holidays.
• Route numbers operating Monday through Saturday with limited or no holiday hours (5 am to 10 pm weekdays; 7 am to 7 pm Saturdays) are listed in Red
• All other non-highlighted routes operate Monday through Friday only (5 am to 7 pm).

Special routes

The Port Authority provides special service to the Pittsburgh Steelers football games and select events at Heinz Field. Prior to the 2007 service cuts, a variety of special routes were implemented to facilitate travel from popular park and ride spots. Today, five special routes are offered, with increased service along standard lines during gamedays. Other special services are sometimes initiated for one-time events. These routes always end with the "S" character designation.

Route renumbering and realignments

Starting April 4, 2010, PAT will begin eliminating the number/letter route system that had been in place since its inception in 1964 – there are 124 routes, down from 168. In its place will be a new system that will incorporate several combined routes and a new number lineup with most of the routes being renamed. In addition, the light rail system and busways will be designated by colors:

• Red Line for the former 42-series light rail routes
• Blue Line for the former 47-series light rail routes
• Brown Line for the former 52 light rail route
• Green Line for the West Busway (Bus routes will begin with a "G")
• Purple Line for the Martin Luther King Jr. East Busway (Bus routes will begin with a "P")
• Orange Line for the I-279 North HOV lanes (Bus routes will begin with an "O")
• Yellow Line for the South Busway (Bus routes will begin with a "Y")
