Valatie (Template:Pron-en) is a village in Columbia County, New York, United States. The population was 1,712 at the 2000 census.

The Village of Valatie is in the center of the Town of Kinderhook on US 9.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.3 km²), of which, 1.2 square miles (3.2 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (3.15%) is water.

In September 2006 the Village of Valatie celebrated the 150th anniversary of its founding. Two parades and a carnival followed by fireworks marked this milestone. Home of Tyler Zeh, Denny Shields and Joe Fey.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 1,712 people, 584 households, and 386 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,388.3 people per square mile (537.4/km²). There were 627 housing units at an average density of 508.4/sq mi (196.8/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 96.67% White, 0.93% African American, 0.47% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.18% Pacific Islander, 0.35% from other races, and 0.93% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.27% of the population.

There were 584 households out of which 36.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.0% were married couples living together, 12.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.9% were non-families. 28.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.09.

In the village the population was spread out with 24.4% under the age of 18, 4.8% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 19.5% from 45 to 64, and 23.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 80.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 73.6 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $44,375, and the median income for a family was $51,563. Males had a median income of $34,500 versus $26,875 for females. The per capita income for the village was $16,650. About 8.0% of families and 10.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.0% of those under age 18 and 15.6% of those age 65 or over.
