Character history
Arrival to the street and affairs
Justine first appeared in Shortland street in 2005 when she arrived at Shortland Street to assist Chris Warner. Justine used her position to undermine Chris and eventually stole the contract away from him and took it to Australia. Justine returned in July 2006 as a main character. She had a steamy affair with Chris Warner and once others found out about this, her promotion to head of surgery seemed inappropriate. She also had a steamy affair with Mark Weston, but Mark broke it off with her after he discovered she was married. That same year Justine's family arrived at Shortland Street, Callum, Hunter and Sophie.
The Whitetails, Scott Spear and Witness Protection
In 2007 she was angered when her then 18 year old son Hunter McKay began a relationship with her husband's work colleague Tess Adamson, a 34 year old solo mother. Justine had a hateful vendetta against Tess.
The start of 2008 was drama free for Justine apart from minor disagreements with her former registrar Dinesh Jivani who returned to India. Justine was horrified to discover that her husband Callum was having an affair with Martha Riley the DHB appointed auditor. But forgave him as he did the same with the Chris Warner situation. In August 2008, Justine and Craig Valentine started investigating the dodgy pharmaceutical company Scott Spear, which had something to do with several deaths. Justine took advantage of John Grainger's advances and hid the fact that she took pictures of Scott Spear's ledger book as evidence to give to the Police as it had details on mysteriously killed people. The mysterious death of colleague Craig Valentine by the hands of the ruthless gang known as the whitetails put the safety of Justine and that of her family in danger. Justine found out where Craig's bag was found and she searched the area and found Craig's syringes and the missing journal. On 10 September, Justine found a bomb attached to a mobile phone in her car. She managed to disarm the bomb to remove the sim card from the phone and swap with her own sim card. Don Lennox (The bomber) observed her drive away and dialed the bomb's phone but nothing happened, soon after there is an explosion which was set off by Justine herself leaving Don, the whitetail gang and John Grainger to think she had died. Callum and the children, Hunter and Sophie at first thought that she had been killed but soon learnt that she faked her death. Justine left for Australia by ship with a new identify with the support of Detective Gardiner and the family had to pretend that she had died. Callum warned Chris Warner not make inquiries about those involved with Scott Spear and the whitetails inadvertently let slip that Justine was under police witness programme which Chris agreed to keep to himself.
Return, the John Grainger and Scott Spear trial and separation
In July 2009, Justine returned for the trial of John Grainger and Scott Spear and was placed in a safe house. Callum went to house unaware he was followed by his lover, Brooke Freeman who knocked at the door which was opened by Justine. Brooke ran off pursued by Hunter to stop her telling but he was unable to catch her. Brooke arrived at the IV and told Kieran Mitchell but was overheard by a whitetail thug who text Grainger. Later thugs pretending to be police came to McKay home wanting Hunter to accompany them - suspicious he phoned the police. As a result the children moved to the safe house. The day before the trial the family including Brooke were placed in lockdown as Grainger's thugs including Don Lennox, the gun-man who thought he killed Justine, were looking for them. On trial day Justine, Callum and the children were to travel to court together but Brooke's tantrums meant that she and Callum traveled together. Don Lennox laid in wait in bushes near the court aimed his rifle at Brooke as he couldn't tell which of the two blonde women was Justine. However when he saw Brooke embrace Callum, Lennox fired. Brooke survived the ordeal though. After Justine gave evidence, she returned to Australia alone having told Callum that should remain with Brooke as he loves her now. It was revealed in 2010 that Scott Spear (the dodgy pharmaceutical company) is facing billions of dollars worth of fines and that John Grainger is imprisoned thanks to Justine.
Life after Shortland Street
Callum and Brooke broke up several months later but Justine had made a life in Australia. But she still keeps in contact with them over the phone. She does not approve of Sophie's relationship to Kieran but it ended in 2010. Sophie still frequently visits Justine. It has been revealed that Justine is researching state of the art medicine in Australia and that she may be up for a nobel prize.
