WCRB (102.5 FM) is a radio station licensed to Waltham, Massachusetts, which serves the Greater Boston area. It broadcasts a classical music format.
Information
WCRB began broadcasting on the 1330 kHz frequency (currently occupied by WRCA) in 1948. Before long, the ownership added FM service on 102.5 mHz. In 1950, the station was sold entirely to Theodore Jones, who would own the station under the guise of Charles River Broadcasting until his death. Although Charles River has acquired other radio stations during the last 10 years, WCRB remains as the company's flagship station.
WCRB was under a long term commitment by Charles River Broadcasting to continue to air classical music for the foreseeable future, and it carries no non-classical music programs. However, the decision to interpret the commitment as a request rather than a demand resulted in the announced sale of the station to Greater Media. Once the sale is completed, the classical format is expected to change.
