The Fire Protection Association is the trade association for fire safety companies in the United Kingdom.
History
It was formed in 1946. Of all people killed in fires, most are killed by those in their own homes.
FPA Scotland was launched in February 2010.
Function
Like many trade associations, it disseminates knowledge and codes of practice on the industry it represents - fire safety in the UK, such as fitting smoke detectors. It represents the industry as a whole on a national level. It produces documentation, DVDs and publications on fire safety. It also offers industry training courses.
Each year in September it organises its Fire Safety Week. It publishes (with the Institution of Fire Engineers) Fire Risk Management every month, which was formerly known as Fire Prevention & Fire Engineers Journal until January 2008.
Structure
It is based in Moreton-in-Marsh, the home of the Institution of Fire Engineers, and the Fire Service College (on the former RAF Moreton-in-Marsh). It is situated on the former airfield, at the college, east of the village, off the A44, next to the boundary with Warwickshire.
It also has an office on Baker Street in London, and on St. Andrew Square in Edinburgh (FPA Scotland).
