New Super Mario Bros is the current working title for a new side-scrolling video game developed by Nintendo for the Nintendo DS. There has been no official release date announcement, but New Super Mario Bros was shown off during the 2005 Electronic Entertainment Expo, so it is assumed that this title is in an advanced stage of development. The first video of this game however, came out in May of 2004 [[1]].

Current information

  • Mario, Luigi and the enemy characters exist as 3D models, while the backgrounds have fixed 2D sprites.
  • Certain mushrooms make Mario, Luigi and the enemy characters extra large.
  • Most levels take place on the top screen, but the underground pipe levels are on the bottom screen.
  • Mario and Luigi can use the Fire Flower, which will transform them into Fire Mario or Fire Luigi.
  • The game supports two players, so one person can take control of Luigi, and both players can work together, or race to the finish.
  • When Mario and Luigi come across items such as mushrooms and fire flowers more than once they can store them (up to three items at once) down the bottom of the touch screen. Players can then touch these items on the touch screen and they will drop down to Mario/Luigi
  • Moves from Super Mario 64 like the wall jump and ground pound can be done by Luigi and Mario.
  • Mario and Luigi can grab loose koopa shells and put them on to grant different powers.
  • The flagpole at the end of each stage in the original Super Mario Bros. game returns to mark the end of the stages. The Castles however have yet to be seen.
