Negus can mean:

  1. An Amharic word for vassal ruler or governor in the pre-1974 empire of Ethiopia . The term negus negust and alternative forms mean "king of kings", or Emperor, although authors often incorrectly shortened this as Negus. See Ethiopian aristocratic and religious titles.
  2. The name of a drink made of wine, most commonly port, mixed with hot water, spiced and sugared. According to Malone (Life of Dryden, Prose Work.i - p. 484) this drink was invented by a British Colonel, Francis Negus (commissioner for executing the office of master of the horse from 1717 to 1727, then master of the buckhounds, died 1732)
