Darren Billy, Jr. (born January 23, 1985), better known as Lab Ox (Template:Pron-en), is an American hip-hop, R&B, and pop producer from Houston, Texas, by way of New Orleans, Louisiana. He has produced for artists and groups such as 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks, G-Unit, Drake, and more. He is currently signed to Jay-Z's record label Roc Nation[1].
Early life and career
Born in New Orleans, Lab Ox moved to Houston at the age of 4. His parents first introduced him to a Casio keyboard at the age of 6, and since, he has taught himself how to play several instruments, including the trumpet, guitar, and piano.
He got his first start in the record business with 50 Cent as a producer on G-Unit artist Young Hot Rod's demo project[2]. In 2006, he landed a production deal with G-Unit Records, which later led to him producing a diss record 50 Cent released on August 17, 2007, aimed at Lil Wayne entitled "Part Time Lover"[3]. The record would later be featured on the mix-tape "Sabrina's Baby Boy", the last in the "G-Unit Radio" mix-tape series[4].
Lab Ox caught the attention of Jay-Z and Roc Nation in early 2009 at the South by Southwest film, media and music festival held annually in Austin, Texas.
His current projects include 50 Cent’s “50 Cent: Blood on the Sand”[5][6], "Then Days Went By" featured on "Before I Self Destruct[7]” and Lloyd Banks ft. Governor "Kill It" featured on Lloyd Banks album The Hunger For More 2[8] as an iTunes bonus track[9].
Lab Ox uses the software based production workstation FL Studio and Cubase. He has been influenced by producers such as Timbaland, The Neptunes, Dr. Dre, Kanye West, and The Underdogs. He works aside his production partners J Angel and Vikaden.
