Dr. Zakir Naik says, (it is available on many video clips on Internet) that following of Imams of fiqh has actually damaged Islam. Therefore, he does not believe in blind following of Imams. He says, he reads Imams rulings and decides what to follow and what not to follow in the light of Quranic verses and Ahadith. Therefore, he says, though he respects all Imams, but does not follow anyone blindly.

To write him as Hanafi, will not be good, and my be not liked to Dr. Zakir Naik himself. As he respects all Imams, but he does not follow them blindly.

Therefore, it is truthful to say that he is Salafi as this belief is the basis of Salafi Islam.

Please do not misunderstand me. I want you to be as truthful in presentation of facts as possible.

When Dr. Zakir Naik himself does not want to follow any Imam blindly, then writing him as Hanafi will indeed contradict his beliefs.
