Nanban (Template:Lang-en) is a forthcoming Tamil comedy film directed by S. Shankar, who directs his eleventh feature film after Enthiran (2010).[1] The cast of the film includes Joseph Vijay, Jeeva, Srikanth, Ileana D'Cruz and Sathyaraj.[2] The soundtrack and background score will be composed by Harris Jayaraj, working with Shankar for the second time after Anniyan (2005). Filming was expected to commence on December 6, 2010, but has since been delayed.[3]
The film will also be made simultaneously in Telugu with a slightly different cast.[4] It is a remake of the 2009 Bollywood film, 3 Idiots, directed by Rajkumar Hirani, with screenplay by Abhijat Joshi, and loosely adapted from the novel Five Point Someone by Chetan Bhagat.
It is surprising the leading director of India, even after Enthiran, while there will be huge expectation from all over India for his next film, chose to remake a film, which has topped the List_of_highest_grossing_Indian_films. In other words most of them have seen the film, know its story, theme, etc. Now, Shankar's interestingly_fresh_storyline_till_release is out in the open. Interestingly, just recently Oliver_Stone during his visit to the Mumbai_International_Film_Festival (MAMI)has seen Enthiran & commented on NDTV interview that he enjoyed watching Enthiran film and said it is fresh and original.
It is a gross under estimation of his growing popularility and expectation from him.

After the announcement of a possibility of 3 Idiots to be remade in Tamil, there was much speculation about who would play the three lead actors. Along with R. Madhavan, who played one of the lead roles in the original, numerous other lead actors from Tamil cinema were initially mentioned in various combinations of three, including Joseph Vijay, Surya Sivakumar, Ajith Kumar, Vikram Kennedy, Silambarasan Rajendar, Jeeva, Vinay Rai, Srikanth, Arya, and Siddharth Narayan. The aforementioned actors, along with Karthik Sivakumar, Bharath, Jai, Jayam Ravi, Dhanush, Kamal Haasan, and Rajinikanth were brought up in an online poll conducted by the website IndiaGlitz in August 2010, asking visitors who they think should play the lead roles of the film. According to the results, Vijay and Silambarasan received the highest votes to play Aamir Khan's and Sharman Joshi's roles, respectively, while Madhavan was voted highest for the role played by himself in the original.[5]
Responding to fan speculation that he would re-enact the same role as the original in Tamil, Madhavan tweeted: "So sorry folks! It’s final and confirmed. I am unfortunately unable to do 3 Idiots in Tamil and Telugu. I am really sorry about that."[6] After public pressure on Silambarasan via prominent social networking websites to accept an offer for a role in the film, media reports claimed that he rejected an offer after feeling that he "would not suit the character."[5] Offers were also reportedly declined by Vinay, Siddharth, and Arya.[7][8] By mid-November, it was officially confirmed that Vijay, Jeeva, and Srikanth were finalized to take over the three lead roles of the film.[9] However, in a turn of events, just weeks after the official confirmation, it was widely reported that Vijay had dropped out of the project after citing scheduling problems and a conflict of interest with the director.[1] This was later reported to be false.[10]
After considering Katrina Kaif, Trisha Krishnan, and Priyamani to play the lead female role,[11] it eventually went to Illeana D'Cruz, who would play the same role in both the Tamil and Telugu version, also making it her second appearance in Tamil films.[12][13] In an attempt to slightly deviate from the original script, it was reported that a second heroine was also being considered for the film.[12] Veteran actor Sathyaraj also confirmed himself that he has accepted to play a key role in the film.[14]
