Illness is sometimes used as a synonym for disease, but it truly refers to a person's perception of having poor health. Most people who have a disease will feel they have an illness. However, in the case of diseases such as high blood pressure (hypertension), many people aflicted will not claim illness. Some people, most notably Hypochondria, may claim illness in the absence of disease.
