X1 is a series of two-car electric multiple units operated by Greater Stockholm Transport (SL) on the Stockholm commuter rail. The X1 was operated in sets of up to five units, making ten-car trains, each unit consisting of one motor car and one unpowered car. 104 units were built by ASEA in 1967-75 and are being replaced by the new X60. The X1 is also the foundation for the upcoming X10-X14 series trains, built in the 1980s and 1990s.
History
The X1 was based on the SJ X6 taken into service in the 1960s, that had replaced locomotive-pulled trains. The X1 interior was based more on the Stockholm Metro with five a breadth seating and three doors per car. Since the start in 1967 the trains have been renovated several, although they look mostly the same today as they did in the 1960s. They are completely compatible with the X10 introduced in the 1980s. The X1 was started taken out of service in 2006 and was planned to be out of service in 2007/2008. Due to problems with the new X60 trains the deadline has been delayed several times. Today (July 2010) there are still 15 units left, that are currently planned to be out of service in spring of 2011.
