Nepal and Denmark established diplomatic relations on 15 December 1967. Denmark opened its embassy in Kathmandu in April 1992. Nepal has a embassy in Copenhagen.[1][2]

History

Nepal and Denmark established diplomatic relations on 15 December 1967. Denmark opened its residential embassy in Kathmandu in April 1992, and Nepal established a residential embassy in Denmark in 2007. In 1990, Denmark included Nepal in the list of its 20 aid-receiving countries. Since then bilateral annual aid negotiations are held every year in Kathmandu.[3] 200 million DKK was given to an education cooperation.[4]

In 2006, Danish Minister for Development Cooperation Ulla Tørnæs visited Nepal, to discuss the ongoing peace process and other bilateral issues.[5]

Cooperation

Economic cooperation between Nepal and Denmark was initiated in 1973 with a loan assistance of 20.00 million DKr. In 1980 Denmark converted all out standing loan amount into grant. For a five-year period starting 1997, Denmark has agreed to provide a grant assistance of 644 million DK to implement various development projects identified by both sides.[3]

Denmark assisted with 70 million DKK for education in 2009.[6]

Denmark have for 20 years assisted Nepalese families with electricity and renewable energy.[7]

Children Nepal Denmark

Children Nepal Denmark was established in October 2001. The creation was a result of chairman, Peer Ortvalds, visits the childrens in Nepal in 1999. Inspired by Children Nepal Denmarks methodology, ideology and achievements, Peer Ortvald decided that he would continue to help with disadvantaged children in Nepal since his return to Denmark.[8]

Trade

Trade between Denmark and Nepal is very small at about US$2 million per year. Denmarks export to Nepal include food and machinery. Nepal exports to Denmark include pashminas and handicrafts.[9]
