Cayetano "Dondon" Woo Paderanga Jr. is a Filipino economist and current Director-General[1] of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), an independent cabinet-level agency of the Philippine government responsible for economic development and planning. Paderanga Jr.'s appointment was announced[2] on June 29, 2010 by President Benigno Aquino III.

Paderanga Jr. is the only Mindanaon in the current Cabinet of President Benigno Aquino III. Paderanga Jr. previously served as NEDA Director-General from 1990–1992, under former President Corazon C. Aquino's presidency and was a member of the Monetary Board of the Central Bank of the Philippines from 1993-1999.[3] He was also Executive Director for the Philippines in the Asian Development Bank (ADB) from 2001 to 2003.[4]

A native of Camiguin province, Paderanga Jr. is a graduate of the Center for Research and Communication and De La Salle University and holds a PhD in Economics from Stanford University. Paderanga Jr. is also a professor of economics at the University of the Philippines School of Economics.

Early life

Paderanga Jr. was born on October 9, 1948 in Camiguin to Judge Cayetano P. Paderanga & Judge Consejo Woo Paderanga. He is the 4th eldest child among 16 siblings.[5]

Education

He attended high school at the Fatima College of Camiguin. He took up Accounting at the De La Salle University in Manila in March 1968 and took his graduate studies in Industrial Economics at the Center for Research and Communication from June 1969 - August 1972. He obtained his PhD in Economics from Stanford University in June 1979.

Career

Paderanga Jr. has published several articles on finance and debt management including “Infrastructure Development in the Philippines” that was carried in the book “Infrastructure Issues in the Asia Pacific.”[6]

Paderanga Jr. is a professor at the University of the Philippines School of Economics but is currently on leave because of his appointment to the NEDA portfolio under the cabinet of President Benigno S. Aquino III. His other teaching stints are as follows:

In July 2010, as NEDA Director-General under President Benigno Aquino III's Cabinet, Paderanga Jr. said that he sees an 8% growth in the economy,[7] higher than the original 5-6% forecast by the government.[8]

Paderanga Jr. became the Executive Director and Alternate Executive Director for the Philippines, Pakistan, Maldives, Marshall Islands, Mongolia and Kazakhstan in the Asian Development Bank from 2001 to 2003.[citation needed]

Papers

Paderanga Jr. wrote a paper on the global crisis of 2009 entitled "Learning From The Global Crisis - East Asian Model",[9] at a time when he was a visiting professor at the Kobe University in Japan.
