David Adam Stockdale (born 20 September 1985) is an English footballer who plays for Fulham as a goalkeeper. He has made over 75 league and cup appearances in the Conference National and League Two with York City and Darlington.[2]

Club career

York City

Born in Leeds, West Yorkshire, Stockdale was developed through the York City youth system and made his Football League debut when coming on as a substitute on the last day of the 2002–03 season. He stated his determination at earning a new contract with York in January 2005,[3] but turned down a contract offer in June.[4] Stockdale had loan spells at Wakefield & Emley and Worksop Town during the 2005–06 season,[5][6] and was released by York City at the end of that season, after being publicly criticised by manager Billy McEwan about his weight.[7]

Darlington

Stockdale joined Darlington in August 2006 after impressing in a period on trial in pre-season.[7] He made eight appearances in the 2006–07 season[8] and when first-choice goalkeeper, Andy Oakes, was sent off in the opening game of the 2007–08 season, Stockdale took over and became manager Dave Penney's preferred choice in goal.[9] Stockdale was rewarded with a new contract in November 2007[10] and went on to make over 40 appearances for Darlington in the 2007–08 season.[11]

Fulham

In April 2008, he was linked with Birmingham City and Newcastle United,[12] but Darlington later accepted a bid, reported to be £350,000 rising to £600,000, from Fulham.[13][14] Despite this, he played for Darlington in the play-offs, where they eventually lost on penalties 5–4 after the matches had ended 3–3 on aggregate.[15] He completed his move to Premier League side Fulham on 4 June 2008, on a two-year deal, for an undisclosed fee.[16] He returned to League Two after joining Rotherham United on a month's loan on 21 November.[17] He made his debut a day later in a 2–0 defeat to Bradford City,[18] and in his next game, a 1–1 draw away at Exeter City, Stockdale saved a Ben Watson penalty and made a late save from a Ryan Harley header.[19] The loan deal was extended for a further month until 17 January.[20]

On 2 March 2009, Stockdale joined League One team Leicester City on a month's loan as cover for first choice keepers David Martin and Paul Henderson after previous loanee Mark Bunn was recalled by parent club Blackburn Rovers due to an injury to Paul Robinson.[21] He made his debut in Leicester's 1–1 League One draw with Stockport County.[22] He later picked up a shoulder injury, which led to Leicester signing Tony Warner on loan.[23] Stockdale extended his loan at Leicester until the end of the 2008–09 season on 6 April.[24] He played for Leicester as their promotion to the Championship was confirmed after a 2–0 victory over Southend United,[25] after which he said he would be interested in joining the club for the following season.[26] Stockdale made his debut for Fulham on 13 September 2009, playing in a 2–1 victory against Everton at home. [27]

On 29 December 2009, Stockdale signed an extension to his contract, which will keep him at Fulham until the summer of 2013. [28] On 22 January 2010, he joined Plymouth Argyle on loan for a month until 18 February, after impressing in a behind closed doors friendly between the two clubs.[29]

International career

He was named in the England National Game XI squad (non-league under 23s) in October 2004.[30]
