William Gordon Rutherford

William Gordon Rutherford (1764-1818) was a Royal Navy officer who rose to the rank of captain. He served in the American Revolutionary War, the French revolutionary War and Napoleonic wars. He commanded HMS Swiftsure at Trafalgar. He was made CB in June 1815 and died at Greenwich Hospital on 14 January 1818.

Early Life

Rutherford was born in 1764 in North Carolina. His father was John Rutherford of Bowland Stow and his mother, Frances, was the widow of Gabriel Johnson the late governor.
