The 2011 World Men's Handball Championship, the 22nd event hosted by the International Handball Federation, are being held in Sweden from 13–30 January, 2011.
24 teams from all the world's continents are participating. Host broadcaster is the Swedish commercial network TV4 Sport and will sell television rights to other countries. The tournament returned to Sweden after 18 years, currently the longest absence in history.
The Championship begins with the preliminary round – four groups of six teams each. Continuing are two main round groups. The Final, and one of two semifinals, are going to be hosted in Malmö Arena in the southernmost of Sweden. The second semifinal are to be played in Kristianstad Arena.
One of the objectives of the championship is to create a multi-cultural party, which extends far outside the handball arenas. The WCh-cities that are decided are Malmö, Lund, Kristianstad, Gothenburg, Skövde, Jönköping, Linköping and Norrköping.

Twenty-four participating teams were placed in the following four groups. After playing a round-robin, the top three teams in each group will advance to the Main Round. The last three teams in each group will play placement matches.

The top three teams of every preliminary group advances to the Main round. Every team will keep the points from preliminary round matches against teams who also advanced. In the main round every team has 3 games against the opponents they did not face in the preliminary round. The top two of every group will advance to the Semifinals, the other teams will play placement matches.
