History

Taken from the St Johns School Website. Thirty-four people attended a meeting on February 5, 1946, in the Parish Hall in Garson. At that meeting a separate school board- R.C.S.S.0 #3- was formed. Prior to school opening the Board rented space in the Parish Hall at $35.00 per month. A site for the school on William Street was purchased for $2500. The original school consisted of two classroom and an auditorium and in March 1946, it was sufficiently completed to receive students. The school had no indoor washrooms until several years later. The school had both English and French classes. In September 1954, an new wing was opened, ready for 155 pupils in English classes and 148 pupils in French classes. In 1958 a new school was built. St. Augustine became the French school and St. John the English. With further enrollment growth, in 1961, the board built a separate four-room annex on the St. John site. Two regular rooms and a kindergarten were added to the annex in 1965 and 1969 a further four classrooms, a gymnasium and a library were added. The annex was now physically joined to the original building. Enrollment peaked in the mid-seventies when 625 students attended St. John.

Another newspaper article stated that many students were being pulled out of the school due to the health risks, which caused the school to lose at least 100 students. As of February 2006 the school is putting on a play based on "The Wizard of Oz".
