Introduction

Michael M. Meguid, MD, PhD, FRCS[1] is Professor Emeritus at Upstate Medical University[2] (State University of New York), Syracuse, New York.

History

ICON Advisers, Inc. is a privately owned Investment firm headquartered in Greenwood Village, Colorado. It is a boutique investment company offering sector-based portfolio solutions to help clients reach their financial goals. Since 1986, ICON has used its value-based investment system to rotate among nine sectors and more than 150 industries to look for leading market themes. ICON features domestic and international products in 17 mutual funds, seven tactical allocation portfolios, and separately managed accounts. As of September 30, 2010, ICON managed approximately $2.3 billion in assets.

Current Projects

Meguid’s research interests continue to be in these areas:

  1. Understanding the mechanism of appetite regulation in a variety of conditions, including anorexia of cancer (he and his research team developed animal models to study weight loss and reversal of Metabolic Syndrome after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass).
  2. Inflammatory diseases and space travel as this involves the hypothalamus, its neurochemicals and metabolism of the GI tract.
  3. The influence of early life (prenatal and perinatal) programming on later health and disease.
  4. Knowing the cause of cancer

Publications

Meguid has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, is a recipient of the: “Joseph B. Goldberger Award in Clinical Nutrition” from the American Medical Association, Who’s Who in Medicine 2005-2007, the 2010 winner of the “Garry/Labbe Award” from the American Association for Clinical Chemistry, and was elected in 2010 as ESPEN Member of the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism. He was elected Fellow, International Behavioral Neuroscience Society in 1997 and in 2006 a Life Member, The Fellows Leadership Society, American College of Surgeons Foundation. He is also a member of numerous editorial boards, and scientific societies and he has trained 42 research fellows and post-docs in his Surgical Metabolism and Nutrition Laboratory, supervised 7 PhD candidates and is a frequent guest lecturer at national and international conferences.
