Ram Milaayi Jodi is an Indian television series that airs on Zee TV starting September 20, 2010. The story about a bubbly yet helpful girl Mona, how she meets her dream boy and her life after meeting him.[1]
Concept
It is an interesting bittersweet tale of coming together of two culturally divergent families - both fiercely protective and assertive about their cultural identities. On a larger canvas, the story represents the dire need for tolerance and co-existence in our society as well.
Despite its socioeconomic, cultural and linguistic divides, India continues to be one land and one heart… a heart that nestles tolerance and acceptance, and that is the essence of the show.
Zee TV serial Preet Se Bandhi Yeh Dori...Ram Milaayi Jodi is the tale of Mona and Anukalp. Mona is Sikh while Anukalp is Gujarati. As fate would have it, Anukalp and Mona get married. However, the marriage has chances of succeeding only if the families bury their hatchet.
The show starts with Anukalp coming to Delhi after getting a job there from Rajkot, Gujarat. He has trouble finding the house he is going to live in. He sees Mona and asks for help to find the house. By coincidence Mona's cousin is getting married and they used the house that was next to their own house.(Anukalp paid rent for that house itself and they had also paid rent for a week or two, the man who they gave money had messed up something). Mona takes Anukalp to the house and he lets them use it until his family doesn't come. Anukalp and Mona become friends, although Anukalp is actually attracted to her. On Sweeti's (Mona' cousin who is getting married) marriage day, Anukalp's family shows up and they are not very happy to see their house filled with others, people especially Anukalp's mom. Mona and Anukalp's some family members have few unpleasant encounters and they seem to not like each other. After the wedding and bidaai is done Mona's family leaves back to their own home. They offer to help Bharti (Anukalp's mom) clean the house but she refuses it. Goldie (sweeti's brother-in-law) falls for Mona and asks her hand in marriage. Mona has to decide what she should say, and she asks Anukalp whom she considers her friend. Anukalp tells her that everyone will give you good and bad reasons, but she has to decide herself. He doesn't like the fact that Mona has been asked to marry someone else. His other friend from his office tells Anukalp that he should confess to Mona that he loves her. Anukalp records his feelings on a cd and decides to give it to Mona. Mona on the other hand says yes because of various reasons. On their Goldie and Mona's engagement day his office friend gives her the cd, but some events lead it to be in the music player that was playing wedding songs. The cd plays and everyone finds out about Anukalp's feelings. There he tries to talk to Mona, but in she who only thinks of him as a friend ends up slapping him. Goldie and his family leave breaking off the engagement(they leave Sweeti at her maayka). Sweeti is feeling bad that her family-in-law left her at her maayka and blames Mona. Anukalp's mom is feeling bad that her son did something like that, she won't talk to him. Goldie and his family comes back and says he is ready for the engagement since he likes Mona (his family although not very happy agree for his happiness). Mona still goes ahead with the engagement, but still she isn't happy with him. Mona also feels bad for slapping Anukalp and that to in front of everyone, when he only told her that he liked her. She tries to call him to apologise. Mona calls again and Anukalp disconnects it for the second time. Mona believes Anukalp is still angry with her. Anukalp regrets not answering her calls. While they discuss what Hetal should wear to impress the Desais, Hetal bursts out in anger. Tired of following everybody's orders, she says that nobody cares for her wishes. Anukalp asks Hetal why she is not ready for the marriage. Hetal explains that the boy is ugly but just because she is a girl, she has no say in her marriage. Anukalp is immediately reminded of Mona's dilemma regarding her marriage to Goldie. Goldie personally selects jewellery for Mona when her phone rings. Vimmi is surprised to see Anukalp calling. When Goldie asks about the caller, Vimmi lies that it is Mona's friend. Anukalp feels guilty for calling Mona in spite of her marriage being fixed to Goldie. Mona notices Anukalp's missed call so she returns his call. But unfortunately Anukalp is talking to the Desai's, his mother sees the call and fumes at Mona on the phone. While Anukalp sulks after the reprimand by Bharti. Goldie works on his charm offensive to win over Mona's family. He tells Vimmy that she was like his real mother and requests her to treat him as her own son. Goldie's declaration impresses everyone. Gurnaam is concerned on seeing Mona disturbed and sad. He asks for the reason. She reveals to him about Anukalp. Seeing the opportunity Goldie asks them to take Mona on a picnic, they finally agree. The Desais request Bharti to allow the youngsters to talk in private, she readliy agrees but Hetal and Anukalp aren't very happy about it. Anukalp goes with the desai girl on the balcony. Mona and Gurnaam's discussion is interrupted by the arrival of Satnaam and Goldie. Satnaam informs Gurnaam that Goldie had something to say to Mona and tactfully takes his elder brother away. Though Mona tries to hide, Goldie believes something is amiss. He asks for the reason but Mona manages to evade giving an answer. Goldie informs Mona about the picnic scheduled for next day and that her parents had agreed to it. Mona is too disturbed to even react. Goldie checks Mona's mobile and gets enraged on seeing that she had called Anukalp. Mona berates him for checking her mobile. She is left speechless when Goldie tells her that he wanted to find out what she was hiding. Desai's want their children to have another meeting with Anukalp and Hetal respectively. With Anukalp's parents permission, they let the children meet. Hetal tells Anukalp that she wants to talk to Gopal (Desai possible groom) one more time before deciding. After spending some time together, Sakshi (Desai possible bride) asks Anukalp if he was sent forcefully for the meet as he seemed to be uninterested. Anukalp is quick with his denial. When Goldie and Mona reach the picnic spot, he confesses that he had lied about the picnic. Sweetie was not even aware of the outing, Goldie reveals. Mona gets upset and walks away; Goldie holds her hand and refuses to let go. Just then, Anukalp sees them. Mona is surprised to see Anukalp at the spot. Goldie accuses her of bringing Anukalp along. When Mona warns Goldie not to say a word against their friendship, Goldie slaps her hard. Anukalp runs to help Mona while Sakshi stands confused. Anukalp grabs Goldie by his collar and warns him never to hurt Mona again. Mona runs away from the spot. When Sakshi asks what the ruckus was all about, Anukalp confesses that he loves Mona. Even though Anukalp apologizes, Sakshi says that she feels insulted. Goldie apologizes to Mona and says that he can't control his temper when he sees Anukalp with her. He offers to drop Mona home but she asks him to stay away from her. Mona also informs Goldie that she is breaking their engagement. Mona breaks her marriage to Goldie, he accuses her of wanting to marry Anukalp in the December 1 episode of Ram Milaayi Jodi aired on Zee TV. Meanwhile, Sakshi comes weeping to Gopal. Gopal and Hetal worry about what happened but Sakshi simply asks Gopal to take her home. When Mona arrives home, she learns that Sweetie is pregnant. Seeing everybody rejoicing, Mona prefers not to inform her parents about her decision. Bharti calls up the priest to ask about Gopal's parents' decision. She is disheartened to know that they rejected both Hetal and Anukalp. Just then, Mona arrives at the Gandhi home and asks for Anukalp. However, Bharti asks her to leave. When Mona still persists, Bharti boils with anger and scolds her. Anukalp tries to intervene but Baa reprimands him for ruining Hetal's marriage along with his own. Bharti continues insulting Mona. Hetal too humiliates her by holding her responsible for turning away the one proposal she had got. Mona, hurt by the accusations, walks away. Anukalp tries to stop her but Bharti stops him. He tells his mother that he truly loves Mona and that she won't be able to stop him from going to her. Goldie on the other hand is surprised to see his family at Mona's house and realizes that Mona hasn't informed her parents about the broken engagement. Mona is crying and she hugs Anukalp expressing her manliness. Anukalp tells her to break the marriage, but she remembers Sweetie's plea (as Mona refusal would cause problems in her marriage) and decides otherwise. Anukalp says he will support Mona in whatever she decides. Mona is glad to have her best friend back and so is Anukalp. He asks Mona to promise him that she will not let Goldie bully her, to regain her self-respect and to be her bubbly self again. When Anukalp goes back to his house his mother taunts him, but he tells her not to blame Mona and that if she forces her for marriage then he will leave home. When Mona returns home, Goldie questions Mona where she had been. Mona asserts that she is answerable only to her parents. Goldie threatens to tell his mother that Mona went to meet Anukalp. Mona snaps back and asks him to worry about how her family would react if they came to know that he had lied about their date and even slapped her. Goldie is forced into silence. Goldie and Mona later go to a showroom to purchase their engagement ring. When Goldie asks for the lifetime guarantee, Mona jeers at him saying that nothing came with lifetime guarantee, not even relationships. Late night, wanting to meet Anukalp, Mona sneaks into his balcony and surprises him. Anukalp is shocked rather than surprised to see her and panics. Both of them panic when Bharti and others return from the temple. Mona's attempt to flee is thwarted on finding that the ladder has disappeared. Mona hides behind Anukalp's chair. Bharti comes to meet Anukalp and fortunately doesn't notice Mona. While leaving she slips on the stairs and hurts her foot. Not wanting any of his family members to see Mona, Anukalp lifts Mona in his arms and helps her escape from his house. Their closeness is epitomized by the song Do dil mil rahe hai from Pardes. When she reaches home and goes to meet her Tayaji who says that Mona looks very happy, that either someone's magic worked on her or she is love. Mona evades her Tayaji's questions, but while going back to her room she ponders over the thought she might be in love, but quickly disregards it. The next day Mona sees Anukalp on balcony they converse with written notes and Mona finds out that Anukalp is going to America for training and she finds herself not liking the fact. The next day Sweetie takes Mona to the salon where she overhears a conversation about the girls brother who is under the spell by her neighbor and his life is getting ruined. Mona is shocked to see that the girl was Hetal. Amrit and Vimmi are dressing Mona and she decides to give Anukalp her lucky charm necklace. Mona sees Vartika (Anukalp's friend) with him and she wonders why she is feeling jealous. Mona then realizes that she has fallen in love with Anukalp. She is in a dilemma on realizing the truth: while she loves Anukalp, she is engaged to Goldie. Faced with the biggest dilemma of her life, Mona remains in her room and tries to sort out her feelings. Vimmi arrives and tells Mona that everybody was searching her and asks her to get ready for the engagement ceremony. Meantime, Vartika asks Anukalp to be strong as only he can help himself. She further says that Mona cannot be with him anymore as she is getting engaged today. Mona leaves her engagement celebrations as she gets upset thinking about Anukalp. When Kalpesh asks Anukalp why he wants to go America, Anukalp says that his salary would increase once he completed the training. Kalpesh realizes that Anukalp is hiding something and asks him if he is trying to escape from his problems. He further says that he expects him to fight his problem and not run away from it. On the other hand, Mona realizes that she cannot marry Goldie and decides to inform Anukalp that she loves him.Mona cannot say it though but she runs away on her marriage day to give a lucky necklace on his way to mumbai. His train is about to leave so Anukalp takes her hand and brings her on the train. Mona is starting to panic a little after she gives the necklace. She is worried that when The wedding procession comes when she will not be there what will everyone think?.they try to stop the train by pulling chain ,but it doesn't have any use..Mona get upset ,Anukalp promise her that he will take her back ..on the other side baraath was arrived and sweetie search Mona everywhere,but she didn't find her.everybody came to knows that Mona was missing.Mona's father went to Gandhi house and ask where's Anukalp.when the both family knows that both Mona and Anukalp are out of their house,both get tensed..Goldie get angry and decided to not return to home until Mona return back.
However, Mona is gripped with fear. Mona fears her family's reaction and decides not to go home. Anukalp convinces her to return. Like the Bedis, the Gandhi family is left agitated by Satnaam's accusations. Bharti tries to call Anukalp on his mobile phone but she fails.Anukalp and Mona start their journey for Delhi. Mona continues to fret over her family's reaction.When she complains about failing to get married, Anukalp asks her if she had started loving Goldie. Mona stops herself from revealing that she had no choice but to get married to Goldie and that she had started loving Anukalp. Anukalp believes Mona had started loving Goldie.Goldie and his family humiliate the Bedis. Harnaam and his family pleads with the Sodhis not to break the engagement. When they cast aspersions about Mona, Gurnaam stops Mrs Sodhi.Mona and Anukalp return. Gandhis and Bedis are shocked on seeing Anukalp and Mona together.Will Mona manage to convince her family?
Goldie boils with anger seeing Mona with Anukalp and bursts on Mona. He abuses her for eloping during her marriage but is yet determined to marry her. Anukalp gets angry seeing Goldie's uncouth behavior towards Mona and warns him.The situation worsens and Goldie and Anukalp are on the verge of a fist fight. Appalled neighbors stop the two of them and criticize the families for washing dirty linen in public. Daarji exhorts Parminder to take away Goldie and dissolve the situation. Mona breaks down and tries to explain to Vimmi that she had no plans of eloping with Anukalp and that she went to the railway station to give him the chain as a token of good luck. Vimmi says that her family will believe her but the society will cast aspersions on her as she spent a night with a boy.Bharti too pulls up Anukalp for his act. Anukalp explains the course of events to her. Mona falls at Daarji's feet and pleads him and the family to forgive her. Daarji suggests that Mona should repent for her actions. Mona agrees and says that she is ready to do anything he asks.The story takes an interesting turn when Daarji takes Vimmi and Mona to Anukalp's house. Bharti asks them in a rude tone if they have come there to humiliate the Gandhis further. But Daarji maintains his composure and says that whatever happened was unfortunate and that no one was to blame. He opines that the only way to salvage the situation was to get Mona and Anukalp married. The Gandhi family is shocked to hear Daarji's words. Will Bharti agree to Mona and Anukalp's marriage?
where Daarji states that Anukalp and Mona should marry each other to avoid further embarrassment to their families.However, Baa refuses the alliance and points out that Anukalp cannot pay for Mona's mistake. Vimmi tries to convince Bharti by stating that if Mona and Anukalp got married both the families would not suffer more humiliation.Bharti counters saying that if she allowed Anukalp to marry Mona then their community would humiliate them more.Daarji asks Bharti to think as a mother and not consider their cast and community. But Bharti still sticks to her resolve.Bharti declares that she would not allow Anukalp to marry Mona at any cost. Bapuji then try to convince Bharti by stating that she should understand other people's plight before making any decision. Considering Bapuji's advice, Bharti eventually agrees for the marriage.Meantime, Satnaam and Rano Bua express concern regarding the marriage. Rano Bua expresses her fear that Mona would not be able to adjust with Anukalp's family due to their differences in their communities.On the other hand, Bapuji assures Baa and Bharti that Mona would be able to adjust with their family.At the Bedi residence, Daarji declares that Mona would marry Anukalp and that nobody would oppose his decision.Vimmi asks Mona to forget about her past and look forward to the future. Mona is happy about the fact that she would marry Anukalp and decides to reveal about her feelings to him.Baa and Bharti go to Mona's place and discuss their marriage traditions and rituals. Meanwhile, Sweetie is shocked when Amrit informs her that Mona is going to marry Anukalp. As per Gujarati tradition, Mona is about to enter the Gandhi residence for the first time but Bharti stops her at the door. Mona loses her balance and a laddo falls down from the pot which she is holding on her head.However, Anukalp arrives in the nick of time and catches the laddo. Vimmi states that it is coincidence that Anukalp is always there to help Mona whenever she is in trouble. She gets emotional and asks Anukalp to always help Mona and take care of her.Following the tradition, Bharti welcomes Mona into their house. She tells Mona that she will have to take responsibility of the entire house after she marries Anukalp. Baa taunts Mona saying that it would be hard for her to take care of the entire house as she could not even follow a simple tradition.Bharti then hands over her bangle to Mona and asks her to take care of it as it was passed on from one generation to another as a per their tradition. Mona assures Bharti that she would never let her down and will take care of the bangle.After returning home, Mona realizes that she will have to meet Anukalp at least once before they get married. She writes a letter for him and asks one of the helpers to hand it over to him.Meantime, Mona's Mama argues with Anukalp's relatives, when they collide with each other. Vimmi intervenes and stops her brother. Bharti then introduces Vijayben and Jayesh Kumar to Vimmi and her family.When the helper comes to the Gandhi residence, Hetal takes the basket from him in which he has kept the letter. Hetal drops the basket when she accidentally collides with another helper. She then picks up the basket but not the letter.The helper meets Anukalp to hand over the letter. However; he fails to find the letter in the basket. He asks Anukalp to search for the letter in the house. Meanwhile, Bharti finds the letter but instead of reading it she throws it away.When Satnaam expresses his concern about Mona to Daarji, Mama assures him that everything would be alright. Anukalp manages to meet Mona. However, both fail to express their feelings when they come face to face.
Rano bua gets furious as she does not like the Gujarati food which is served after the kavi sammelan.When she complains about the food to Satnaam, Daarji overhears the conversation and stop Rano bua from creating a scene.Meantime, Anukalp asks Mona what is bothering her so much. Mona tries to express her feeling but fails.On the other hand, Jayesh Kumar points out to Rano bua that nobody forced them to eat the food and attend the kavi sammelan. Satnaam counters saying that it is disgraceful on the part of the Gandhi family to behave rudely with their guests.Baa loses her patience and taunts Satnaam that they should appreciate their efforts and not make fun of them.When Jayesh speaks ill about Mona, Satnaam loses his temper and storms out from the Gandhi residence.Daarji forgives Satnaam and Rano bua for creating a scene at Anukalp's house. But at the same time he requests them not create more problems for Mona's wedding. Vimmi then asks Rano bua to start preparing for the sangeet ceremony. On the other hand, Mama decides to throw a bachelor party for Anukalp.Mona reveals to Amrit that she agreed to marry Goldie because she did not want any trouble for Sweetie. Amrit is moved hearing this. Mona also apologizes to her for putting Sweetie in more trouble by not marrying Goldie.Meantime, Kalpesh assures Bharti that everything will fall into place with time. He also points out to her that if she accepts Mona from her heart then things would get easier. On the other hand, when Satnaam expresses concern for Mona, Vimmi assures him that she would adjust with Anukalp's family with time.At the bachelor party, when Anukalp, Kalpesh and Jayesh arrive, Mama welcomes them. Mama tries to mock them but Satnaam stops him saying that Daarji would not like it.
Anukalp loses his senses after he gets drunk.When Anukalp expresses his desire to meet Mona, Mama asks him to go and meet Mona immediately. After Anukalp leaves, Satnaam arrives and tells Mama that he did the right thing by getting Anukalp drunk.When Anukalp passes out at Bedi residence, Rano bua taunts Bharti saying that Anukalp is irresponsible and shameless. Vijayben counters saying that Anukalp is innocent as he must have been forced to drink alcohol.At the Gandhi residence, Jayesh Kumar praises the Bedi family for organizing a great bachelor's party. When Baa asks Kalpesh why they did not stop the Bedis when they offered alcohol to Anukalp, Jayesh Kumar lies saying that the party was overcrowded and therefore they could not keep an eye on Anukalp.Bharti expresses her displeasure at him consuming alcohol when Anukalp comes back to his senses.Meantime, Rano bua and Satnaam refuse to wear the traditional clothes sent by the Gandhi family. Daarji tries to make them understand that they should accept their culture and traditions rather then make fun of them. However, Satnaam states that he would not wear the clothes at any cost.The pandit discloses to the Gandhi family that the following day is auspicious for Anukalp and Mona's wedding. Bapuji states that they would inform the Bedi family when they meet them in the evening for garba.Amrit too reveals to the family that their pandit has opined that Mona's wedding should take place the very next day.Daariji is elated hearing this.When the Bedi family arrives for the garba, the Gandhi family is surprised as they expected them to wear their traditional clothes. When Vijayben asks why they did not wear the clothes which they had sent, Vimmi lies saying that the clothes did not fit them properly.Mona tells Bharti that she wants to know if Anukalp is happy with the marriage. Bharti asserts that for Anukalp the marriage is just a compromise though he would always keep her happy. She further points out that because of her mistake, the Gandhi family is suffering. Mona is shocked hearing the statement.
Bharti makes it very clear to Mona that Anukalp's decision to marry comes at the price of his family's happiness.Meantime, when Vimmi enquires about Mona, Rano bua asks her not to fret.Satnaam informs Bharti that the muhurat for Mona and Anukalp's wedding has been fixed for noon the next day. A surprised Bharti points out to Satnaam that Mona and Anukalp's marriage as per Gujarati traditions was scheduled at the same time.Satnaam finds himself in a tight spot and asks Bharti what they will do. Bharti states that they would follow Gujarati tradition for Mona and Anukalp's marriage. Satnaam is shocked.He points out to Bharti that they can follow Punjabi tradition for the marriage as well. However, Bharti sticks to her resolve and tells Satnaam that before accepting their proposal she had made it clear to Daarji that they would follow Gandhi family's tradition.Rano bua interrupts Bharti and asserts that she cannot force her whims on them. Jayesh Kumar and Vijayben then start arguing with Rano bua. Daarji intervenes and asks them to maintain peace.Anukalp believes Mona is marrying him not because she loves him but for her own self respect. Mona is elated to see Sweetie and hugs her. Mona apologizes to Sweetie for the troubles she caused. Sweetie tells Mona that she doesn't need any explanation and also asserts that Anukalp is the right match for her.Rano bua and Satnaam make fun of Gandhi family when they arrive for the marriage. On the other hand, Anukalp is disheartened thinking that Mona does not love him. Vimmi welcomes Anukalp and his family when they arrive at their place for marriage.The groom's party is surprised when Rano bua asserts that they should start abusing the Gandhis. Daarji explains to the Gandhi family about the Bedi family tradition. Mama and Rano bua taunt the Gandhi family following the tradition. Vijayben also taunts them in return.After the customary rituals, the marriage ceremony begins in the Punajbi tradition. With the muhurat for marriage fast approaching, Bharti asks the Bedis to finish the rituals quickly.Satnaam gets furious and objects to Bharti's demand. Jayesh Kumar informs Bharti that the pandit is waiting for Mona and Anukalp. Bharti has a tough time handling her relatives.After Anand Karaj gets over, Mona goes to change her dress. Vimmi and Sweetie are unable to help Mona wear the sari. Bharti comes searching for Mona when she fails to reach the marriage venue. Bharti helps Mona wear the sari. with just minutes remaining, Mona reaches the mandap. Jayesh Kumar asks the pandit to start the ceremony.Mona and Anukalp are about to take pheras when Mona faints. Everyone is shocked.Anukalp discovers that Mona had fainted as she was wearing tightly fitting jewelry. Bharti realizes her mistake and confesses that she had helped Mona wear the jewelry and also that Mona never complained.Everybody is relieved when Mona regains consciousness.Following the tradition, Mona and Anukalp take pheras. After the marriage ceremony gets over Vijayben asks Anukalp to complete other rituals and ask for a gift from Vimmi.As a gift, Anukalp asks Vimmi to forgive him and Mona for all the troubles they caused. Vimmi is moved by Anukalp's gesture. Daarji tells Anukalp that there is no need for him to apologize.When Baa asks to start the bidaai ceremony, Daarji states that first they will follow the preeti bhoj ceremony at their place.Bapuji and Daarji are happy that Anukalp and Mona got married. Bapuji asserts that with time their families will forget all their differences. Daarji tells Bapuji that he only wants their family to stick together always.Meantime, when Mona expresses fears about adjusting with Anukalp's family, Vimmi tells her that once she is able to win Bharti's heart, things will get better. She also assures her that Anukalp loves her a lot and will always stand by her. Vimmi advices Mona to always support Anukalp. Vimmi advices Mona to be careful and asks her daughter to take every step after careful thought. Mona assures Vimmi that she would not let her down.Meantime, Sweetie is gripped with fears about how Parmeet's parents would react to her decision to attend Mona's wedding. Parmeet assures Sweetie that if she apologizes, everything will be alright.Daarji and Bapuji are happy to see Mona and Anukalp together when they arrive for preeti bhoj ceremony.After the ceremony gets over, Daarji asks Bapuji to forgive him and his family if they caused any trouble during the wedding. Bapuji hugs Daarji and asserts the wedding went exactly the way they wanted.Vimmi, Sweetie and Amrit get emotional during the bidaai ceremony. Following the tradition Mona arrives at Anukalp's place in a doli.Bharti welcomes Mona and Anukalp when they arrive at her house. She then asks Mona to follow the rituals and enter the house. She also makes Mona understand that her choices and decision would now affect the family and its fortunes. As Mona enters the house she follows the rituals of a Gujarati family. As Mona enters her room Anukalp comes in. Anukalp and Mona start to get all romantic on their nuptial night. The next day Anukalp and Mona wake up late. Sejal comes in and wakes them up. They were suppose to be up at 6:30 but it ends up 8:00. As Mona and Anukalp get ready Bharti comes in. Bharti asks Mona if she ever wore a sari. Bharti helps Mona get into a sari and they start the morning puja. Mona and Anukal start off their day with everyone's blessings.
