Dr. Marouf Suleiman al-Bakhit (Template:Lang-ar, born 7 May 1947) is the current Prime Minister of Jordan. He first served as Prime Minister from November 27, 2005 until November 25, 2007. He was previously the Jordanian ambassador to Israel and the national security chief. Bakhit's main priorities are to maintain security and stability in Jordan, as he was appointed by King Abdullah II less than three weeks after the 2005 Amman Bombings. Al-Bakhit was reappointed Prime Minister by the king, following weeks of protests in the country on February 1, 2011.[1]
Education
Marouf Al-Bakhit graduated with a Bachelor's degree in General Management and Political Science from University of Jordan. He also earned a Master's degree in Management from the University of Southern California, and a PhD in War Studies from King's College London in 1990. He also holds many honorary and active degrees, memberships and affiliations locally and internationally, as well as 16 Medals and decorations.
Military career
Marouf al-Bakhit comes from one of Jordan's Tribes Al-Abbadi Tribe, he joined the Jordanian Armed Forces in 1964. He graduated from the Royal Military College in 1966 as Second Lieutenant and retired from the Armed Forces in 1999 as Major General.
He participated in a number of senior roles in the army, including in the 1990s as the President of Mu'tah University for military affairs and before that as Manager of Research and Development and Director of Purchases and Director of Personnel Affairs in the General Command of the Armed Forces.
He also commanded a team responsible for security relations with foreign countries and European security establishments. He represented Jordan in arms limitation talks in Madrid.
He was replaced by Nader al-Dahabi.
Civilian career
This led to the launch of his civilian career and he worked as a member of the Higher Guidance Committee and a General Organiser of peace processes during the years 1999 - 2002. Then he was assigned the Ambassadorship of Jordan to Turkey, a title he held until 2005, when he moved to Israel, again as an Ambassador.
Prime Minister
Bakhit was Prime Minister twice, first from from November 27, 2005 until 25 November 2007, and then from Feb.1,2011.
First term
Bakhit was appointed by King Abdullah II less than three weeks after the 2005 Amman Bombings. The 2005 Amman bombings were a series of coordinated bomb attacks on three hotels in Amman, Jordan, on November 9, 2005. The attacks killed 60 people and injured 115 others.
After a two years trying to get reforms through the parliament and then an questionable election, he resigned and was replaced by Nader al-Dahabi.
Second Term
After two weeks of street protests, on Feb.1, 2011 King Abdullah fired his prime minister, Samir Rifai, and re-appointed Bakhit to his old position.
