Bagong Silangan is a barangay located in the 2nd district of Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines. Nearby barangays are Commonwealth, Batasan Hills and Payatas. Separated by a river in the east, the barangay leads to the Municipality of San Mateo in the province of Rizal.

History

Bagong Silangan share its history with San Mateo, Municipality of Rizal as Bagong Silangan is once part of San Mateo. In fact, notable events such as The Battle of San Mateo took place in here. During the early 1960s Bagong Silangan is known as a rich agricultural area where rice is the main product. During the latter years a drastic conversion brought by relocation effort for informal settlers from the downtown. Therefore, the establishment of the barangay as a separate entity and later formally recognize as a part of Quezon City. The sudden expansion of built-up area of the Metro led the informal sectors flock the area as a site of downtown substitute. Thus, the barangay became infamous as a squatters' area. When former Mayor Ismael A. Mathay, Jr. granted the rights of land ownership to the barangay people, some long-termed conflicts have been solved. Since then, population has been rapidly increasing and a continuing growth of children dependents is visible.

People and Culture

Bagong Silangan is a growing barangay in Quezon City composed of people who came from different parts of the country. Tagalog is the prime language being spoken. Also numerous in the area are minority of Ilocano, Bisaya, Kapampangan, Pangasinan, and Swardspeak speakers.

The onset of latest information dissemination through internet and cellphone leads to a genesis and later radial variation of cultures creating a special variety of way of life we known as subculture. Bagong Silangan as a part of the agglomerating Manila did not let herself at the end of this race. Thus, a growing veriety of these subcultures rapidly penetrates almost all areas of Baranggay, which includes jejemons and jejebusters, as well as rip stick skaters, gangsta, and pokpokers.[citation needed]

The barangay is also the home to informal settlers who occupy not only vast tracts of public and private lands but also riverbanks, creeksides, aqueducts and transmission lines.[4]
