Episode Summary

Episode 1: Auto Racing

Aired: Wednesday, March 4, 2009.
Location: Atlanta, Georgia
The series starts by composing each team at a racetrack located in Atlanta, Georgia. The teams must first answer their first clue: "Race to the colour of the flag that starts the race", which was green. All the teams got the answer, except Teal and Red, which pushed them to 8th and 9th place.

For the first challenge teams would then race Go Karts starting in the positions they arrived at the green flag.

For the second challenge, teams would be given a garage number and would need to find the only opening to the garage. Then they would have to change the air filter of a car, push the car out the garage, start the car, and race to Sabrina. All teams completed the task with Yellow in first. When it was down to Teal and Red, Teal beat out Red, keeping Red in last place. The Green team finished last because Jesse walked instead of running.

For the third challenge, the teams would receive a ticket with a section, row, and seat number. They would need to retrieve their clue card from under their designated seat. On the clue card, there was a cherry pit, which told teams to go to the Pit Stop. The Shield was located in an underground tunnel used to go under the stands, but no one found it. When arriving at the Pit Stop, Yellow was in first, whereas Green was still in last.

For the final challenge, teams would change two tires of a car. After having their tires checked, one team member would race a real Nascar around a track and try to see 3 flags. The contestant would then have to tell Sabrina the correct order and the colors of the flags. The Orange team finished first and chose the Big Reward. Purple came in second and won the Wrench. The Yellow team finished last, and the Grey team finished second last. Yellow would have been eliminated, but the first experience turned out to be a non-elimination leg, meaning the Yellow team was saved from elimination.

Episode 2: Alligator Wranglers

Aried: Wednesday, March 11, 2009
Location: Florida City, Florida
For their second experience, teams made their way to Florida City, Florida to become alligator wranglers.

For their first task, the teams had to collect 3 baby alligators with their team colour on it. The teams all start at the same time. With 7 teams finished, it comes down to Jesse for Green, and Tyler for Brown. The Brown team, only needing one, completes the task before Green. The standings after the first task were: Purple in 1st place, Green in last.

For their second task, teams would need to retrieve an alligator from a pond, and give it to an alligator wrangler. The Purple team, who won the Wrench, were able to give it to one team of their choice. They chose the Yellow team due to Ben's dislike for Talon. The Wrench forced only one member of the Yellow team, which was Maddison, to retrieve 2 alligators from the pond. The Shield, for this experience, was found in the alligator wrangler's pocket. Though the Blue team spotted the Shield, the Red team attained it after Blue wasn't able to keep quiet about it. After all the teams were finished, Purple was still in first and Green was still in last.

For their third task, teams would need to retrieve 15 dead rats and race towards the feeding area. The first 8 teams arrived at the feeding area with Green awaiting their start. Orange realized they were missing one rat and had to run back to retrieve it. When Orange retrieved their last rat, Green had just begun. In the footrace, Orange just beat out Green. The teams, in the order they arrived, would then need to throw their rats at the to clear a path for them to retrieve their next clue. The teams completed with Purple in first, and Green in last.

For their final task, teams would read their clue card, which gave them a riddle. They would have to figure out that the first letter of each word would spell out Observation Deck, which was the location of the finish line. Though difficult for some teams, they all figured out the riddle and ran to the Observation Deck. The Purple team came in first and chose the "Big Reward" while the Blue team came in second and won the Wrench. In the end, Orange and Green were the last 2 teams to arrive. Without a Shield, the Green Team, Carlisse and Jesse, became the first team eliminated from In Real Life.

Episode 3: Rodeo Cowboys and Cowgirls

Aried: Wednesday, March 18, 2009
Location: Rose Hill, Kansas
This episode starts with the remaining 8 teams arriving at the Sankey Rodeo School in Rose Hill, Kansas.

Their first challenge is to ride El Toro, a fake bull. Teams would choose one team member to ride the fake bull while the other team member would be randomly assigned to buck off an opposing team's rider. The riders only have to stay on for a maximum time of 2 minutes. Sammi for the Teal Team was the first to fall after 0:07 seconds. Then, Aaron for the Red Team and Landon for Grey Team fell after 0:14 seconds. Talon for Yellow, Jaiden for Orange, Ruby-Rae for Purple, Paul for Blue, and Tyler for Brown all survived the 2 minutes, putting them in a tie for first place. Because of Sammi's short ride on the bull, the Teal Team would depart for the next challenge 1:53 seconds after the first place teams.

For the next challenge, the teams would have to place 10 tags on their marked bull in the pen. The Shield was hidden around the neck of a bull but none of the teams managed to retrieve it. The Purple Team finished first, followed by the Brown Team. While some teams finished the task, some missed one tag (Yellow and Red) and had to return to the pen. This mistake allowed the Grey and Blue Teams to finish in third and fourth while the Yellow and Red Teams finished in fifth and sixth. With six teams finished, only the Orange and Teal Teams remained. Sammi, for Teal, and Jaiden, for Orange, were doing all of the work for their teams while their teammates, Madison B. and Paige, wandered around aimlessly. Ultimately, the Orange Team finished ahead of Teal, leaving Teal in last for their next task.

For the third challenge, the team members would choose one person to ride a real bull. All the selected contestants stood forward and Sabrina informed the teams that the Wrench would come into play. The Blue Team would be able to use their Wrench to switch one of the teams' riders. They chose the Grey Team, meaning instead of Isiah riding the bull, Landon would ride it. The teams would be judged on their style (maximum of 20 points) and the amount of time they spent on the bull (maximum 5 seconds). They would then be multiplied for a maximum score of 100. The teams would ride in the order they finished the previous challenge. Talon for the Yellow Team received the highest score with 64, whereas Jaiden for Orange and Madison B. for Teal received the lowest score of 6. The scores would be multiplied by 2 and would be the amount of seconds added to their finishing time from the previous task. The Purple Team remained in first whereas the Orange and Teal Team remained last, while being separated by 5 seconds.

The final challenge had teams roll a wagon wheel to the designated gate. The Purple Team departed first, followed by Brown, Yellow, Blue, Grey, Red, Orange, and then Teal. The teams realized that there were two places with the same name, but one said Lane, one said Court. The Brown Team did not spot this small difference resulting them falling behind the other teams. All teams eventually made it to the finish line, but with one twist... they would need to navigate around a Fence Maze in order to reach Sabrina and cross the finish line. All teams were together until they reached the finish line. Blue was an obvious first and all teams came tumbling in for a photo finish for second place, which ended up being Purple Team. The Blue Team chose the "Big Reward" while the Purple Team were awarded the Wrench for the second time. In the end, Orange and Teal battled it out for last spot, with Orange beating Teal to the finish line. Without a shield, the Teal Team, Samantha and Madison B., became the second team eliminated from In Real Life.

Episode 4: Hollywood Stunt Performers

Aired: Wednesday, March 25, 2009
Location: Hollywood, Los Angeles, California
The fourth episode began with the 7 remaining teams arriving at the Paramount Studios in Hollywood, California. The first challenge was to be in a chase scene with a stuntman. It was a timed event so the teams had to finish the designated course as fast as possible. The Purple Team came in first, followed by the Grey Team, Yellow Team, Blue Team, Brown Team, Red Team, and Orange Team. By the end of the first challenge, Orange was 17 seconds behind Purple.

The second challenge was to build a prop-stool from the pile of materials. Purple had received the Wrench coming in second in Episode 3 and used it on the Grey Team. For their disadvantage, the Grey Team had to build two stools instead of one. The Red Team came in first, followed by Yellow, Brown, Orange, Grey, Purple, and Blue. Even though Landon and Isiah had received the Wrench, they managed to come in 5th and beat the Purple team, the team who gave them the Wrench.

For their third challenge, teams had to re-enact a chase/fight scene. Teams could get a maximum score of 12 points based on their performance. Every point would count for 30 seconds, which will decide the order for their last challenge. Blue, Brown, and Grey managed to score 11 points. Yellow scored 10 points while Orange scored 9. Purple and Red received the lowest score of 8 points. After the scores were tallied up, the Yellow Team was now in first place. They were followed by Brown, Red, Grey, Orange, Blue, and Purple.

The final challenge was to race to the finish line on Washington Square. Teams were given a clue card with invisible ink, directing them to Washington Square. While most teams went into the abandoned bakery to read their clue under the ultraviolet light, some were able to read it under the shade. The shield for this experience replaced a credit card advertisement on the bakery window but none of the teams spotted it. Yellow, Brown and Red raced to the finish line with Red coming in first, Brown in second, and Yellow in third. The Red Team chose the "Big Reward" which gave the Brown Team the Wrench. Grey and Orange worked together for a fourth and fifth place finish. Purple and Blue became the last two teams and fought it out to stay in the competition. With neither team visiting the abandoned bakery, it became a footrace with Purple following behind Blue. In the end, Ruby-Rae was a step ahead of Lilith, after accidently hitting her, and the Blue team came in last. Without a shield to save themselves, the Blue Team, Paul and Lilith, became the third team eliminated from In Real Life. In the Alligator Experience the Blue team could have gotten a shield and the Purple team would have been gone in this episode.

Episode 5: Farm Frenzy

Aired: Wednesday, April 8, 2009
Location: Vermilion, Alberta
This episode began with the contestants arriving at a farm in Vermilion, Alberta. In this experience, the six remaining teams would become farmers. The first task was to do three procedures in caring for a pig. Each team had to catch the pig with their team colour and perform their three procedures. First, teams had to take the pig's temperature for 30 seconds. Next, the teams had to give the pig a shot behind the ear, put a tag on the ear, and put some green toothpaste on the ear. After this challenge, Purple came in first place, followed by Red, Brown, Yellow, Grey, and Orange.

Their next challenge was to use a tractor to move a bale of hay from the top of the hill to the designated area at the bottom. The Purple, Red, and Orange teams finished with the best times. The Yellow Team engaged in an argument over who would drive the tractor and came in fourth. The Brown Team had problems with their tractor and came in fifth but the Grey Team had the most difficulty. The Grey Team was in a distant last place and was unable to complete the task. The rules stated that if a team cannot complete a task within 10 minutes of the second-to-last place team, they will automatically start the next challenge 10 minutes behind.

The next task had teams milking a cow. In this task, the Wrench came into play and was used on the Yellow Team. The Yellow Team's disadvantage was that they had to milk the cow with only one hand. After this task, Purple remained in first, followed by Red, Yellow, Brown, Grey, and Orange.

For their final task, teams had to trade in their milk for a clue card at the farmer's market. The Shield was hidden on one of the jars at the farmer's market, however, none of the teams spotted it. Once teams received their clue card, they had to figure out where the finish line was located. When teams have the correct answer, "Silo", they would have to fill a wheelbarrow with manure and push it to the finish line.

At the end of this experience, the Purple Team finished in first, followed by Red, Yellow, and Brown. The Grey Team's wheelbarrow wheel fell off but they still manage to finish over the Orange Team. The Orange Team pushed themselves to the finish line, only to come in last. The Orange Team did not have possession of a Shield and were the fourth team eliminated from the competition. Purple managed to regain first place in spite of coming second to last on the previous challenge.

Episode 6: Firefighting

Aired: Wednesday, April 15, 2009
Location: Vermilion, Alberta
In this experience, teams would take on the roles of firefighters. At the start of the experience, teams were given the opportunity to swap teammates. If both members of a team chose not to switch, their teams remained the same. However, if at least one member of a team wanted to switch, that team would be broken up. Isiah and Landon (Grey Team), Graeme (Brown Team), and Aaron (Red Team) all chose to split. In a random draw, the new pairs were: Red: Aaron and Graeme, Brown: Landon and Tyler and Grey: Isiah and Jaicyea. The Purple and Yellow Teams chose not to split and remained the same. Any team who had possession of a Shield prior to the switch was allowed to keep it. Both members who swapped teams would have possession of it, allowing both teams to have a Shield.

In the first challenge, teams had to tie a rope to the hose and pull it up from a building. One team member raced to the top of the building and threw the rope down while the other team member tied the rope to the hose. Once both members were at the top of the building, they would then pull the hose up. The standings at the end of the challenge were: Purple, Red, Grey, Yellow and Brown.

In the second challenge, teams had to cut a hole in the roof of a house to let the smoke escape. While one person cut the hole with an axe, the other held the ladder. The Purple team, who won the Wrench on the last experience, chose to wrench the Red Team which forced them to swap positions in the task. The Shield was located on the fire truck behind the teams but nobody spotted it. With the two challenge times added up, the standings were: Yellow, Purple, Brown, Red and Grey.

In the third challenge, teams had to put out the flames in a burning building. Some people struggled with a fear of the task while some teams struggled with putting on their equipment. The order that teams would depart for their last challenge was: Purple, Yellow, Red, Brown, and Grey.

In the last challenge, teams had to retrieve their clue card from inside a locked car. With a crowbar, teams would be able to open the door to their clue, directing them to the finish line of the experience. The Purple Team came in first place and chose the big reward while the Yellow Team came in second and won the Wrench. The Red Team arrived third, the Brown Team arrived fourth, and the Grey Team arrived in last. The Grey Team had a Shield and escaped elimination by becoming team number four. The Brown Team, now in last place, did not have possession of a Shield and was the fifth team eliminated from the competition

'Teams That Split: Grey Team, Red Team and Brown Team

Episode 7: ER

Aired: Wednesday, April 22, 2009
Location: Montreal, Quebec
In this experience, teams did the things that emergency room doctors would do. In the first challenge, teams would have to save a mannequin suffering from a heart attack. Teams would need to check the breathing and pulse, give it an oxygen mask, give chest compressions, and call code blue resulting in the crash cart to shock and stabilize the patient without having the patient die. The standings after the first challenge was Purple, Red,Yellow and Grey.

In the second challenge, the teams had to remove two pieces of glass from a pig's foot and then stitch up the incision. First, teams needed to wash their hands for 2 minutes, so their hands would not be contaminated upon operation. Grey and Red both washed their hands short of the two minutes so they had to restart. After entering the ER, teams would need to remove 2 pieces of glass from a pig's foot and give the foot 3 stitches. Once again, the purple team won this challenge, stayed in first place, and the standings did not change. During this challenge, some of the teams saw a Shield on an overhead monitor. Red saw it first but since they already had a Shield, they weren't able to claim it. The Yellow team spotted the Shield on the monitor as well, and ended up finding it.

In the third challenge, the teams would need to help another fake patient. They had to give him oxygen, and insert a sterilized needle into one of his veins. Then they had to transfer fake blood into the body, also known as transfusion. After the challenge, the standings remained the same, with Purple in first and Grey in last.

In the final challenge, teams needed to treat a person that has just been in a car accident. Since the Yellow Team won the Wrench in the last experience, they decided to use it on the Purple Team, and that gave them a one minute disadvantage. One of the team members had to hold the injured person's head while the other one pumped up a mattress. The teams then rolled the patient onto the mattress, secured the patient and lifted him/her onto a stretcher. They needed to strap in the person and go to the ambulance, where their clue card awaited. It instructed teams to drive their ambulance to the finish line, with the help of a GPS.

The final standings for this experience were Purple in first, followed by Red, Yellow and Grey. The Purple Team chose the wrench and the Red Team received the big reward, which consisted of a Nintendo Wii, Wii Fit, and Trauma Centre: New Blood. The Grey Team arrived last but exhausted their Shield during the last experience. With no way of saving themselves, Isiah and Jaicyea were the sixth team eliminated from the competition.

Episode 8: Dirty Jobs

Aired: Wednesday, April 29, 2009
Location: Côte Saint-Luc & Montreal , Quebec
In this experience teams did tasks that are related to the removal of garbage.

Their first challenge was to pick up garbage on a street. The Purple Team went first, Yellow went second and Red went last. At the end of the challenge Purple had a 9 second advantage over Red and a 17 second advantage over Yellow.

The second challenge was to vacuum pieces of garbage from a parking lot with a large super sucking vacuum. Purple wrenched Yellow making them take the longer route with a piece of garbage between every pylon. Red team ended up currently in first, followed by purple in second and deeper in last was yellow.Purple was nervous being in second because without a shield they could be eliminated

For the third challenge, the contestants were driven to a junkyard in a truck where a shield was hanging on the mirror. Ben from purple, the only team so far without a shield, spotted it putting all the teams on an "even playing ground." Then they had to roll over a pile of garbage and cover it in dirt with a garbage squeeze thingy. Yellow gained a lead and were now in first.

For their final challenge, the contestants had to find five non-compostible items from pools of compost, where their clue cards were hidden. The clue cards would point them to smoke stacks, which would lead them to the finish line.

The Yellow Team finished first, followed by Purple, since they knew they had come in last, Red Team did a wacky jig. Fortunately for Red Team, this leg was a non-elimination leg due to the introduction of solo play next episode.

Episode 9: The Circus

Aired: Wednesday, May 6, 2009
Location: Montreal, Quebec
This episode starts with the contestants arriving at Cirque Eloize in Montreal, Quebec. This is the first time the contestants will be competing solo, and their first task is to do a ground routine. They must ride a miniature bike between two points. If their foot touches the floor, they must start over. Then, they must continue to the tight-rope where they must go back and forth. If they fall off, they must start from the beginning of the rope. If the contestant doesn't finish in 10 attempts, they will receive a 2-minutes penalty.

First up is Ruby-Rae; she completes the ground exercise in 2:01. Talon is up next; he does very well, and finishes with a time of 1:41. Maddison goes next; she fails to complete the bike in 10 attempts which leads to a 2-minute penalty. Maddison also has plenty of difficulty on the tight-rope. On it, after her 8th attempt, she starts to cry and then falls off, and gets injured. She fails to complete the tight-rope and finishes with a time of 7:23, but with her time penalty it is 11:23. Aaron is up next; he rides the bike perfectly, and completes the tight-rope act on his first attempt, finishing with the fastest time of 0:31. Graeme goes next, but fails to complete the tight-rope, finishing with 3:52 plus a 2-minute time penalty, so his time is 5:52. Up last is Ben, who fails to complete the bike but finishes the tight-rope, and finishes with the time of 2:39 plus a 2-minute penalty making his time 4:39.

The next task is to complete 10 specific moves on the trampoline, do 5 specific moves on the rings, and then catapult into the air. They will be scored in their routines. Aaron goes first with a score of 52, Talon goes next with 64, followed by Ruby-Rae with a score of 69. After that, Ruby-Rae, Aaron, Talon, and Graeme all look for the shield, and Talon finds it under a cube. The next person to perform is Ben finishing with 63, followed with Graeme with a score of 57, finished by Maddison with a score of 56. The positions have not changed, but they are closer to the leader, Aaron.

Their next task is to perform a show in front of a live audience. They will be scored by professionals. After the performance, Maddison finished with a score of 91, Aaron with 87, Ruby-Rae with 86, Talon with 85, Ben with 83, and finally Graeme with 79. After, the standings were: Aaron, Talon, Ruby-Rae, Ben, Graeme, and Maddison.

Their final task is to climb a silk to retrieve their clue card, and solve the riddle. They must then either take the stairs or elevator to the top floor. The door to the upper deck will be locked on the stairs and so will the ground, meaning they would need to go all the way to the basement and take the elevator up. On the upper deck, they must jump off the ledge to the finish line in the air.

Aaron begins with losing his clue card by dropping it from above; allowing to bounce off, allowing all other competitors to get ahead of him. Talon finishes in first, followed by Ruby-Rae, Ben, and Graeme. This leaves Maddison and Aaron racing to the finish. Maddison beats out Aaron by a couple of seconds. Talon decides to take the big prize of an iPod Nano whereas Ruby-Rae receives the wrench. Aaron finishes in last, and did not find the shield, meaning that he has become the 1st individual eliminated from the competition.

  • 1st place: Talon
  • Bottom 2: Maddison & Aaron
  • Last Place: Aaron
  • Eliminated: Aaron

Episode 10: Adventure Guide

Aired: Wednesday, May 13, 2009
Location: Whistler, British Columbia
In this episode, challengers became Adventure Guides. Their first challenge was a kayak race in which they had to find four ribbons set on checkpoints in the water, then head to a finish line. Ben finished first, closely followed by Ruby-Rae, then Talon, Graeme, and Maddison in last place. However, Ben and Ruby-Rae couldn't find the final ribbon, putting them in second last and last respectively.

In the next challenge, the contestants had to use a compass to navigate the woods and find five checkpoints. At each checkpoint, they would have to alter their course as instructed. Ruby-Rae used the Wrench she won in the Circus Experience on Ben, forcing him to lug a heavy backpack through the woods. The Shield was hanging on a tree near the fifth checkpoint, but nobody found it. Ruby-Rae and Ben (despite his Wrenching) pulled ahead, while Graeme got lost, changing the order to Talon, Ruby, Ben, Maddison and then Graeme.

Next, challengers had to hang a tent between trees and then hang their bags of food over a wire. Despite his lead, Talon fell behind when he made a mistake with his tent and then accidentally tripped over Ruby's tent. After the challenge, Ruby-Rae was in first, followed by Ben, Maddison, Talon, and finally Graeme plus Talon was angry with Ben.

In the final race, challengers had to grapple down a cliff, change the rope they were hooked to, and then climb down another cliff. Once at the bottom, contestants had to use searching devices and shovels to find and dig up backpacks hidden in the snow. The backpacks contained the Clue Cards. From there, they'd have to hike up a small cliff to the finish line. Ruby-Rae finished first and claimed the Big Reward. Ben finished second, and obtained the Wrench. Talon finished third. Despite stumbling on the cliff, Maddison finished fourth, with Graeme moments away from 4th, and Graeme was the 2nd individual eliminated from the competition. The big prize was an inflatable kayak.

Episode 11: Police Action

Aired: Wednesday, May 20, 2009
Location: Vancouver, British Columbia
In this experience, the final 4 contestants arrived at a beach in Vancouver, British Columbia, where they were informed that their next experience was law enforcement. They were told their first task was to drive an ATV over certain obstacles, put out a barbecue fire, and return back. They started in the order they finished the last experience. Ruby-Rae went first, finishing with a time of 2:22. Up next was Ben, who, after having trouble starting his ATV as well as crashing into a log, finished with a time of 2:42. Next was Maddison who finished quickly with a time of 2:35. Last was Talon, whose engine kept breaking down. He finally finished in 2:52, putting the standings as: Ruby-Rae, Maddison, Ben, Talon.

Their next task was to board a moving police boat, then send a floating stretcher toward a "drowning person" (a trained rescue worker floating in a survival suit). They were then to hoist the person onto the boat. They were then told that they would compete in pairs: Ruby-Rae and Talon VS Maddison and Ben. Ruby-Rae and Talon went first and worked together well, but Talon hoisted the swimmer slowly. They finished with a time of 7:25. Maddison and Ben were next, and managed to quickly get into the boats and retrieve the stretcher. They worked together well, finishing with a time of 5:37. This brought the standings to: Maddison, Ben, Ruby-Rae, and Talon still in last.

Their next task was to retrieve bags of counterfeit money, located on the support poles of a nearby pier. They would have to swim to reach the poles. Ben uses the Wrench he obtained in the Adventure Guide Experience on Talon, forcing him to retrieve two hidden bags instead of one. Maddison went first, followed by Ben who quickly caught up. By the time Ben got to the pier, Talon had just started his swim to retrieve the bags. Maddison and Ben arrived at the pier first searching for bags. Ben was able to find his first, followed by Maddison, Ruby-Rae, and Talon. Ben decided to search for The Shield in the pier instead of finishing ahead of Maddison, but failed and finished after her. Ruby-Rae then found her bag, leaving Talon alone on the pier still trying to find two of them. Talon finally found his two money bags, finishing in last place.

Their final task was to ride mountain bikes in a forest, where they would find several clues leading them to where a graffiti gang (four actors) might be. They would find a clue card showing where the graffiti gang was. Maddison and Talon were able to find the clue cards first, while simultaneously convincing Ruby-Rae that they were still looking. Ben doesn't fall for it, and got his clue card at the same time Maddison figured out the location ("under bridge"). Talon then correctly deciphers it, and although Ben asked for Talon's help, he refused to tell him and only gave Ben the first word. Talon took an unnecessary detour through some bushes and fell behind. Ruby-Rae came back and quickly figured out the clue. Ben begged for Ruby to help him, but she refused. Seconds after she rode off, Ben figured it out. Maddison found and busted the gang first, finishing her first experience in first place. Talon's detour allowed Ruby-Rae to make her arrest, followed by Ben, before Talon finally found the location, finishing in last. Talon, however, uses the Shield he obtained in the Circus Experience to avoid elimination, causing Ben to get eliminated instead of him. Afterwards, Maddison chose the big reward (digital binoculars), while Ruby-Rae got the Wrench.

  • Top 2 Contestents: Maddison & Ruby- Rae
  • 1st Place: Maddison
  • Bottom 2: Ben and Talon
  • Last Place: Talon
  • Eliminated: Ben
  • Prize Winner: Maddison
  • Wrench Winner: Ruby-Rae
  • Wrench Used on: Talon

Episode 12: Elite Forces

Aired: Wednesday, May 27, 2009
Location: Chesapeake, Virginia
This experience started with the three remaining challengers being told that their next experience was to be Navy SEALs (by a real SEAL). Their first challenge was to run around a path, shooting 8 targets with paintball guns. In this challenge, the Wrench immediately came into play. Ruby-Rae, who won it last time, used it on Talon. While Maddison and Ruby got 15 paintballs to shoot their targets with, Talon only got 10. Both Maddison and Talon finished the challenge hitting only 3 targets. Ruby, on the other hand, hit every single target with one shot, putting her far into 1st place. Talon, who finished a bit quicker than Maddison, was in 2nd, while Maddison herself was put in last.

Their second challenge was to start a fire using flint, steel, wood and tinder. After starting the fire, challengers would have to build it up large enough to boil a cup of water. Ruby-Rae immediately got her fire going, but it quickly went out, and she couldn't get it going again. Maddison and Talon had similar results. Eventually, Talon and Ruby ran out of tinder, with only Maddison having any cotton left. At that point, the real Navy SEAL they had been introduced to in the beginning of the episode started trash-talking them. He then gave each challenger another piece of cotton. Afterwards, he sat down and quickly started and built up a fire of his own. Maddison, mimicking his technique, boiled her water and finished the challenge in 1st. Talon and Ruby, both out of cotton again, forfeited the challenge, giving each of them a massive time penalty of five minutes.

In the third challenge, challengers were told that Navy SEALs (dummies) had crashed their helicopter into a river and needed rescuing. This challenge was split into three parts.

In the first part of the third challenge, challengers had to walk, crawl and jump along a booby-trap filled path, each collecting two of six map pieces hanging from trees along the way. Each booby-trap set off would earn them a 15-second time penalty. Maddison went first, setting off two booby-traps and getting both her map pieces. Next went Ruby-Rae, who only set of one booby-trap. Finally, Talon tried to be stealthy by crawling, but he set off two booby-traps anyway and was very slow. The challengers then put their map pieces together, forming a map showing where the crashed pilots were.

The second part was to work together and row a boat to a paddle checkpoint, while getting shot at by the "enemy" (two professional Navy SEALs) with their laser tag guns. Each hit would cost them a penalty, but the SEALs would not shoot if the challengers sat still. No one got shot, and when they reached the paddle, they discovered that the Shield was on it. Maddison and Ruby-Rae both tried to get it, and Maddison succeeded.

The third part of the challenge was to travel through a forest to a checkpoint, while still trying to avoid enemy fire. The SEALs, unlike last time, shot simply if they saw a challenger. Each challenger got shot twice. Once they reached their checkpoint (a clearing), they radioed a helicopter.

The last part of the challenge was to jump out of the helicopter into the water, swim to where the pilots were, and get a clue card, which were around the pilots' necks. The clue cards read "SEAL: Take your pilot through S to where A met L." Contestants had to figure out that they had to take their pilot through the SEA to where AIR met LAND, which in this case was where the helicopter originally took off. The finish line was located there.

The contestants started in their current positions (Maddison, then Ruby-Rae, and finally Talon), and the results were the same. Maddison found the finish line first, choosing the big reward (a paintball party for 16) while Ruby got the Wrench. Talon, knowing he was out, tried to make the girls laugh by running goofily with his flippers, then falling over on purpose. Talon, having used his Shield in the last episode, was the 16th contestant eliminated from the competition.

  • Top 2 Contestents: Maddison & Ruby-Rae
  • 1st Place: Maddison
  • Bottom 2: Ruby-Rae and Talon
  • Last Place: Talon
  • Eliminated: Talon
  • Prize Winner: Maddison
  • Wrench Winner: Ruby-Rae

Episode 13: Air Force Pilots

Aired: June 3, 2009
Location: La Jolla, San Diego, California and the Mojave Desert

The final experience started off with a recap of all experiences previous. After it was finished, Maddison and Ruby-Rae, the finalists, were introduced to their final experience by Sabrina: becoming aircraft pilots. (Maddison also had her Shield confiscated by Sabrina.) They would go through three challenges before going into their final challenge: a dogfight. Each of the three challenges would give the winner points. The first challenger to three points would get an advantage in the dogfight.

The Wrench immediately came into play in this episode. Ruby-Rae, who won it in the last experience, had to use it on Maddison, slowing her down in the first challenge. The first challenge was for the finalists to drop beanbags onto a bullseye — while flying on a paraglider. From the rim of the target to the bullseye, the points were as follows: 5, 10, 20, 50. Dropping a beanbag out of the target altogether would result in no points being added. Ruby got 10 beanbags to drop, but Maddison, being Wrenched, only got 9. After several misses and no bulleyes, the final scores were 90 for Maddison and 100 for Ruby, giving Ruby-Rae 1 point.

Their next challenges involved jets. Once strapped in, the finalists would have to escape the aircraft as fast as possible. The first person with both feet out of the aircraft and on the ground would get a point. It was a photo finish, with Ruby-Rae ultimately getting a second point. Their third and final preliminary challenge took place in the air: After being instructed by their co-pilots, each challenger would have to execute three barrel rolls. Each finalist's roll would be compared, and the better would win a point, for a possible maximum of a three-point gain. Since Ruby already had 2 points, Maddison would have to execute every roll better than Ruby-Rae if she wanted the advantage. Amazingly, Ruby-Rae overspun on every roll, while Maddison did rather well. However, after her third roll, Maddison threw up into her airsickness bag. Despite that, she won all three points, which gave her the advantage in the dogfight.

In the dogfight, the finalists would take turns being the "attacking plane". They would fire virtual bullets from their fighter in an attempt to shoot the other plane. The "defending plane" would try to avoid being hit. If the defender was hit or an entire minute passed with no hits, the challengers would switch places. The first finalist to three hits would win the entire competition. Because of her superiority in the roll challenge, Maddison got a free point right off the bat. She also started off in the attacking position. Despite Ruby-Rae's crazy aerial manoeuvers, Maddison hit her in the last seconds of her minute. Ruby-Rae also hit Maddison during her turn. Again, Maddison became the attacking plane, with the score 2-1 in her favor.

Maddison just needed one more point to win. However, before her minute was up, she almost passed out. She gave up trying to pursue Ruby, and threw up again. Crying, she informed her copilot that she couldn't complete the challenge. Ruby-Rae had noticed that Maddison's plane stopped chasing her. As Maddison's pilot landed the plane, and Maddison emerged, once again holding a bag of vomit. Sabrina asked her what happened, to which she told her that her entire body felt numb, and she knew she wasn't supposed to be feeling like that. The other co-pilot told a confused Ruby-Rae that Maddison had given up, and she had won, upon which she became ecstatic. When she reached ground, she also had the usual talk with Sabrina. She was given the ultimate Big Reward: A $15,000 scholarship to any college or university of her choice. She was also given the choice of 4 vacations - skiing, Hawaii, sports, or a trip to New York City, and she chose Hawaii. She also got an In Real Life watch, like every other contestant. Maddison was given a watch, too, as well as a laptop for making it to the final 2.

On that note, Maddison and Ruby-Rae once again took off, flying towards the sunset (with no rolls this time), which ended In Real Life Season One, with Ruby-Rae as the champion.

  • 1st Place (Champion): Ruby-Rae
  • Last Place (Runner-Up): Maddison
  • Eliminated: Maddison
  • Prize Winner: Ruby-Rae
  • Prize: $15,000 scholarship, Trip to Hawaii
  • Consolation Prize: Laptop
  • Wrench Used on: Maddison
  • Shield: Lost by Maddison

Season 2

The season two successful contestants had to pass a phone interview to make their own 5 to 7 minute video and then travel to the next stage of casting which was made in mid-January 2010. The 50 who passed this step will then move onto a one on one interview. Filming started in May 2010 and ended in August 2010. The season premiered in Canada on October 4, 2010, on YTV.

They race to complete the ship's manifest before heading out to the ocean where they haul up nets of mackerel. Back on shore, they cut the fish and stuff it into bait bags before heading out again to haul in lobster that they will catch in 100 lb traps.

RESULTS: Teams we're given the choice to swap partners right in the beginning. Allison from Teal team and Tanner from Yellow Team stepped up, but since there we're just two teams who wanted to swap, they decided to stay in their current teams. In the beginning, teams had to get supplies in their list of supplies they needed. Yellow began getting the supplies with the wrong flag color for their boat. Grey managed to get 1st place while Yellow started out in Last Place.

Teams then head out to the sea to get 30 fish from the nets with their team color buoys. Yellow Team had a bit of trouble getting their net out thus sending them to last place in this challenge. Green Team managed to finish first followed by Purple, Teal, and Grey.

Grey wrenched Teal Team for the second challenge since they we were ahead and wanted both Teal and Yellow to use their shields at the end. Teams had to make bait bags full of mackerel and put them into their Lobster Trap. They had to get all Lobsters and other Sea Creatures out of the Trap and put back 2 Lobster traps to finish. Since Teal Team was wrenched, they had to do 3 Lobster Traps instead of 2. In the end, Purple was 1st to finish followed by Green, Grey, Teal and Yellow Team.

Their final challenge was to get their clue cards in a bin of gross hagfish. Then in the clue, they had to empty the bin into a smaller one and trade for a boat. Green finished the experience 1st and chose the wrench so Purple got the Prize. The last team, Yellow, had a shield, but Teal(second-last) also had one. They decode and send a message using halyards and flags before finally battling rising floodwaters to save their sinking ship. One thing is for sure, they are all gonna get soaked.

RESULTS: Teams had to give orders to a stowaway in the ship and continue on into the ship and get to the room 2B and find their contraband. Teal and Grey managed to figure out that they had to go down to the 3rd floor and come back up to the 2nd floor another way. Purple and Green had a little trouble figuring out but fortunately for Green, they found a shield. Grey and Green forget to get their contrabands at the challenge and had to go back to get them. Teal got first place followed by Grey, Purple and Green.

In this challenge, teams had to translate a code involving flags and send back a message using the flags. All teams translated the code correctly "BOOK CODE" and found that their message was in their guide they got in the beginning. Grey had "HALYARD" and Teal had to translate "FRIGATE" while purple and green translated "NAVY 100". Teal didn't know that the flags needed to send their message we're in alphabetical order so they fell to second place while Grey went ahead to first place. Since Purple let go of their flag, they we're issued a 5 minute penalty on the next challenge.

In the second last challenge, teams had to fix artificial leaks to finish the challenge. Green wrenched Teal so they had to fix an extra leak. Grey began on a slow start while the wrenched Teal worked extremely quick and got in first place even with the wrench. Grey dropped their bolt for the pipe leak so they had to find it in order to finish. Purple dropped their bolt twice and the wasted time made them in last place one again.

In the race to the finish, teams had to go inside a dark room with night vision scopes to find their clue cards hidden around the room. Teal was first to find their clue card. The clue cards told them to go to the galley (kitchen) and then take starboard (right) path. If they remembered that starboard was right, they would pick the short path. Grey was the only team to take port(left), since they mixed it up. Teal was first and Purple was second. Grey and Green we're the last 2 teams. Since the Green team had the shield, Grey was sent home completing 6 experiences.
