File Copyright problem
File Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading File:AttonEdinNapier.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, we also need to know the terms of the license that the copyright holder has published the file under, usually done by adding a licensing tag. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged files may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the file will be deleted 48 hours after 23:03, 8 February 2011 (UTC). If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. ww2censor (talk) 23:03, 8 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I uploaded an image File:AttonEdinNapier.jpg in the entry Chris Atton and it has now been tagged for deletion. I took the photo myself so I've emailed permissions-en@wikipedia.org with the standard wording for release of copyright. Is this sufficient or do I need to do any more to ensure the image isn't deleted. Newbie here and struggling a bit with all this! Toffin (talk) 06:39, 9 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It's even easier than that. How do you want the image licensed? Do you want to release it into the public domain, or do you want it under a free Creative Commons 3.0 license? —C.Fred (talk) 06:50, 9 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Fred. I'm not really sure just as long as it can stay up and not be deleted. Which would you recommend? Toffin (talk) 06:56, 9 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Based on personal experience (I took and uploaded this image to Commons), CC-BY-SA 3.0. It makes the image free by the Wikipedia definition; it also says you should get acknowledged as the creator in any derivative uses. —C.Fred (talk) 06:59, 9 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That's what I emailed to permissions so hopefully the threat of deletion should be withdrawn? Is that correct? Toffin (talk) 07:22, 9 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I've removed the deletion tag, as per your comment above, the image is under a CC-BY-SA 3.0 license. I've added the {{cc-by-sa-3.0}} tag to the file accordingly. —C.Fred (talk) 07:33, 9 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks indeed - much appreciated. Toffin (talk) 07:35, 9 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Glad I could help out. If you need any assistance on anything else in the future, let me know. —C.Fred (talk) 07:37, 9 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Fred. I've left a query in a new section on your talk page. Toffin (talk) 07:45, 9 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
