Trains only stop here upon request. The station was designated for the axe in Dr Beeching's "The Reshaping of British Railways" in the 1960s. However, because it is on the line linking two major cities in Manchester and Cardiff, it was ultimately saved.
Nearby is "The Railway Hotel", a public house which has won many accolades for its beer and atmosphere (with "HOTEL" written on the side facing the railway).
