Chris Hines is an American college basketball player currently with The University of Alabama.
High school career
As a junior, Hines averaged 26 points and 8.5 rebounds per game at Evergreen, Alabama's Hillcrest High School. In his senior year, he averaged 25 points, 12 rebounds and 2.5 blocks. He was named the 2006 Alabama Class 4A Player of the Year and led his team to the the 4A State Title; scoring 24 of his teams' 35 points in the title game. For his effort, he was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. He too was recognized by the Alabama Sports Writers Association as a member of the state's "Super Five" Team and was runner-up for Alabama's Mr. Basketball honor. Hines also played the 2006-07 season with North Atlanta Prep in Georgia.
College career
Due to a low ACT score Hines was unable to qualify academically for a Division I school. Thus, he attended Southwestern Illinois College. In his freshman season he averaged 14 points and 9 rebounds, earning all-region and all-conference recognition. He was named a first-team junior college All-American as a sophomore scoring 20 points and 12 rebounds per game while leading SWIC to the NJCAA National Tournament and Region 24 Title.
Coming out of junior college, Hines was ranked by both Scout.com and Rivals.com as a 3-star prospect at the small forward position [1] and in October of 2008 chose to sign with The University of Alabama and then head coach Mark Gottfried. Hines said of his recruitment,
"Alabama is home and I always wanted to come back home and play my college basketball. It's been a dream of mine. I had other options but I grew up watching Alabama basketball and they needed me... I like Coach (Antoine) Pettway. I remember him when he was at Alabama. He's not much older than me so he understands some of the stuff I have to go through. He recruited me as hard as anyone. We have a good relationship and I feel comfortable going there knowing he'll be there for me." [2] Despite not playing a game for Coach Gottfried, who was relieved of his duties in January of 2009, Hines appeared in all 32 games and started the final 14 games of his junior season for Alabama. He averaged 3.7 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. and following the season was named the teams' Most Improved Player.
